I'm quite familiar with Hondas. In that price range, you are looking at a 2000 Civic model for about 6k or a 2001 model for about 7k. That is a fair price. You could probably even talk a private party down a little, but make sure you get it checked at a dealership before you buy. I wouldn't get one with over about 80,000 miles on it. Civics are so common, that you can get a low mileage one. Don't let someone talk you into paying full price for a high mileage car. Keep in mind that Honda changed the Civic body style in 2001, so it might be your benefit to go with an '01 as opposed to a '00, because it is the newer model. People will see it as a newer, more desireable car. Check out both though, because you may actually prefer the look of the '00 body style. In '00, Honda came out with a real nice looking SI model, most were in a snazzy blue or red color. They are hard to find and command a little more money though. As for Honda dealerships, they would be the best as far as knowing they thoroughly checked and maintained the car, but they will try to stick the price to you. It's great if you can get a fair price. If their cars are not flying off the lot, they may accept the prices I quoted above. It is not what I would consider a good or bad deal, so it would be fair if you could get one there for that kind of price. As for independent dealers, make sure it's reputable and does not deal with salvaged cars or other junkers. Given the age of the car, it is common for them to end up at an independent lot, because most dealerships just wholesale those cars. But some independent dealers pick up the cheapest thing they can get and not do a thing to it, but still jack up the price. Other independent dealers just get low cost, quality, trade in cars & check them out. I would take it to a Honda dealership for an inspection just like you would with a private party. Online, you can check autotrader.com. They are my favorite. You can put in lots of search criteria. Remember, most people will put a higher price than what they will accept, so you can put a broader price range in as a search. Independent dealers list there, too. Check your local paper, and check your local Honda dealership. Let me know if you have more questions. Also, if you like the Civic, you'll love the Prelude. You could probably get a '00 model or so around your price range. They are awesome, I had one. Good luck.
