CR-V Fires
Make sure you hire a competent technician to change your oil! See Below
HONDA ENGINE FIRES Reported and Web Produced by: John Matarese Updated: 07/09/04 17:57:55 ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES ON THE ROAD IS UNDER INVESTIGATION TONIGHT ... AFTER MORE THAN TWO DOZEN ENGINE FIRES. THE GOVERNMENT IS INVESTIGATING FIRES IN CERTAIN HONDA SUV'S. THIS IS A CONCERN BECAUSE THE FIRES ARE HAPPENING AFTER OIL CHANGES, IN SOME CASES AFTER THE VERY FIRST OIL CHANGE AT 3,000 MILES! AT LEAST 27 HONDA CR-V'S, 2003 - 2004, HAVE CAUGHT FIRE AFTER OIL CHANGES, ACCORDING TO GOVERNMENT REPORTS. THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION SAFETY ADMINISTRATION BELIEVES OIL LEAKED ONTO HOT EXHAUST SYSTEM DURING "SLOPPY" OIL CHANGES, AND CAUGHT FIRE. IT TURNS OUT THE OIL FILTER IS CLOSER TO THE CRV'S HOT ENGINE MANIFOLD THAN IN OTHER CARS. I WOULD MAKE SURE YOUR TECHNICIAN KNOWS ABOUT THE RISK OF FIRE WHEN CHANGING OIL. NO RECALL AT THIS POINT...SO WHEN CHANGING THE OIL, TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO SPILL. |

Re: CR-V Fires
We're having a big discussion over this issue in the forums at Edmunds.com
So far around 30 CR-Vs have charred up, and another 150 got disabled following oil changes. You Honda loyalists are viewing this as a non-issue, as it's only affecting 1 out of every 1000 CR-Vs. If this is indeed a non-issue and is perfectly normal for a car...why have this attracted the attention of the NHTSB and the media? Would you strap yourself, your wife and your kids into a CR-V following a visit to Jiffy Lube, if you knew that you had a 1/1000 chance of the car going in flames or all of a sudden breaking down? I've learned to not trust what corporations, politicians or celebrities tell me at face value. Something shady is going on with Honda that they don't want to reveal. As soon as I get some money I will be trading in my 2004 CR-V for a car that doesn't explode after an oil change. In any case hopefully Honda will do the right thing and recall this car before anyone dies. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Bush "Iraq has tons of Weapons of Mass Destruction" Honda "The CR-V fires have been caused by dumb factory-certified technicians, that's the extent of it" Ken Lay "I didn't know Enron was collapsing" OJ Simpson "I'm 100% not guilty" Bill Clinton "I did not have sexual relations with that woman..." Or maybe, people that have a CR-V will make sure that the people they allow to perform work on their vehicle's are qualified to use a screwdriver or wrench. And, that they have a steady enough hand to pour liquids without spilling them ;^) -- Brian If it weren't for STRESS I'd have no energy at all. |
Re: CR-V Fires
The *issue* is the location of the catalytic convertor in relation to the
oil filter. Yes, there's a side issue here with sloppy workmanship taking place during an oil change, but Honda is trying to push all the blame onto those service shops performing oil changes and is trying to push the blame out of their house for the design problem. Fortunately I'm not a CR-V owner, but if I were, I'd be nervous as hell after every oil change. That shouldn't have to be the case. Sloppy workmanship resulting in an oil stain on my driveway or garage floor or running the engine out of oil is one thing, burning up the car with me or my family in it is an entirely different matter. One is a damage or malfunction issue, the other is a personal safety matter. This buck stops at the manufacturer, not at the service shop. Since this is only affecting the Honda CR-V, I do not see how Honda can point to the service shop when the cause stems directly from a design issue. I can see it now, CR-V owners requiring oil change shops all across the land to begin signing affidavits certifying the accuracy of their work. And, that they have a steady enough hand to pour liquids without > spilling them ;^) > Well, so far at least thirty of them have not. This is not a non-issue. If it actually happens to 1 in 1000 vehicles, it's a catastrophe. Imagine the same thing happening at the same rate to, say, GM pickup trucks. That said, I doubt something shady is going on at Honda with respect to this. I have heard 'recall' mentioned, but I wonder if the fix doesn't entail re-engineering the block. I suppose they don't have a reasonable answer yet. Clearly, if the average user (or oil shop guy) doing what is usually done to effect an oil change can engender this problem this often, there is a design flaw. I wouldn't sell my car; I'd make sure I changed the oil. RFT!!! Dave Kelsen If only you'd use your powers for good instead of evil... |
