Perhaps it blew a head gasket or broke a timing belt and someone just
replaced the whole engine.

Randolf is incorrect- somewhat.
I can't speak for US models, but in Canada in 1988 (excluding the CRX),
Honda released only one model of Civic engine, and it had 92 hp. In fact in
1988, Honda only offered one trim level, and that is the "STD" that Nacho
referred to; auto insurance offices called it 'S.'
In 1989, the Company released an "econo" version of this engine that
generated 70 hp; this latter engine was marketed to compete with the Pontiac
Firefly/ Chevrolet Sprint high-mileage 3 cyl engines. The CRX HF didn't come
out in Canada until after 1989.
Nacho, your car has the 92 hp engine.
