The American car makers have been doing things like this for as long
as can be remembered. They did it for a reason - so that the
consumers who use their products throw their hands up in disgust and
have to go to auto shops to get such rudimentary work done. Women are
particularly susceptable to the horrid situations such as you have
described.

Those car makers have also engaged in planned obsolence of their
products - delivering cars that only get about 100,000 miles for their
life cycle as opposed to the 150,000 or so delivered by the foreign
automakers like Nissan, Toyota, and Honda.

The American automakers have also been in collusion with the oil
companies by not having their products deliver higher miles per
gallon. The foreign automakers have done so, and that is a great
reason, along with the ones given above, that the American automakers
have found themselves in the position they are in now - even after
they have found themselves in that position before.

There is a car maker in Italy which produces a car that gets 147 miles
per gallon. Sure, it does not have all of the pollution control
mechanisms that are required in the US, but then again the cars do not
produce a lot of pollution.

And, because of the role that lobbyists have in our society -
protecting their employers at the great expense of the American
people, the American people have been shafted by the domestic
automakers.

One further point to be considered is when the domestic car
manufacturers started offshoring the manufacturing of their
automobiles to 3rd world countries such as Canada and Mexico there was
not any reduction in the price of the products.

So the American automakers have continually dug themselves deeper and
deeper holes since the early 1970s, when Toyota and Volkswagen started
to clean their clocks due to their insouciance and insolence.

Let them fail - they deserve it!

And with the government, less MPG means more fuel taxes collected.

you are so full of it that it is coming out of your ears. i know of more
american made vehicles with over 300,000 miles on them than i do of foreign
made vehicles with 150,000 miles on them still driving on the roads.

again. you are full of it.
i laugh at the honda commercials where they claim their sardine can car gets
"an amazing 21mpg average"
my full size ford crown victoria gets a lousy average 24mpg, and with the
cruise set at 60mpg, it consistantly gets over 30mpg on long highway runs
with 4 adults in it.

> There is a car maker in Italy which produces a car that gets 147 miles per

again you are full of it.
the only way a car can get 147 mpg is if the engine is turned off, and it
is falling down a very tall mountain. .

again, you are full of it.
the american people are being shafted by themselves. if they would not buy
foreign junk, there would not be any problem

now you are just plain friggin stupid.
Mexico and Canada are not "3rd world countries"

So the American automakers have continually dug themselves deeper and
deeper holes since the early 1970s, when Toyota and Volkswagen started to
clean their clocks due to their insouciance and insolence.

again, you are an idiot.

the American automakers are failing because of idiots like you who would
rather buy foreign junk.

And Ford, GM and Chrysler, too. A lot of these cars go well over
150,000 mi.

That's an electric car. http://www.zapworld.com/ And it makes plenty
of pollution when the electricity is generated.

Wrong! They have been shafted by themselves for not punishing the law-
makers who listen to lobbyists and by not speaking up for themselves.

Really? The cost of automobiles, when adjusted for inflation, has been
pretty steady. And, today's cars have much more, like safety devices
and accessories (e.g., Ford's Sync, CD players).

Couldn't get any of my 'merican cars to last much past the last

you must not be a very good "automotive technician" then.
my 79 F250 4X4 has 213,000 miles on it, and still plows snow.
my 88 superduty 4X4 has 257,000 miles on it and still going strong.
my 02 superduty has only 153,000 miles on it so far.
my partners 2000 F350 has 257,000 miles on it, and it is just broke in.
the guy across the street has a 90 F150 with 215,000 miles on it, and it
still purrs too.
one of the kids down the street has 327,000 miles on his E150, and it still
looks like new.
one of my subcontractors has 6 trucks, the newest a 90 chevy C30, and they
all have over 300,000 miles on them, and still work every day.
i can give you another 40 or 50 to add to this list that i personally know
about with over 150,000 miles on them.
and every one of the above vehicles all still have the same engine and trans
that came from the factory.
now on the other side of the fence.
my niece had a toy yoda that had 2 engines blow before it has 100,000 on it.
it is now in the junk yard.
the neighbor next door to me bought a 2006 Camry. it has been back to the
dealer 8 times so far, and has less than 30,000 miles on it. as soon as the
warrantee is up it is gone.
across the street next door to the F150, they had 2 toy yodas, and 2 nissans
and a mazda that all blew up before they made 76,000 miles.
they now drive fords.

i have never seen a foreign made vehicle that made it over 100,000 miles
besides a few german made cars and a coulpe of hondas. and by the time the
hondas made 100,000 miles the bodys were falling off of them.

It has already been proven that your powers of observation are lacking.
Makes your point(s) meaningless. Perhaps you would consider dropping your
tired rants and let the GM group get back to what it was before all this
started, and let people enjoy the group without your "contributions".

It seems obvious why you are a "former" automotive technician then. If you
can't get any better life out of an American vehicle than that, it says a
great deal about your automotive skills. Too bad. So many of us have had
no problems getting 200,000 plus out of American vehicles.
