this has revoloutionised our lives - it is awesome! no more being lost in the ghettos looking for a police station to get directions!!!i dont know how i survived without one before.its so easy even my dad could use it. (he has just mastered the microwave after 25 years).
I really like TomToms and in fact already had this exact model, purchased almost 2-years ago for near double the price. Wanted to get a 2nd for the wife's car so got this. First the map upgrade hassle... code doesn't work and TomTom help site suggest you can't update a refurb. A quick e-mail to TomTom and sending in the receipt resolved this - just annoying you have to go through that.Second issue... jumped in the car and got 5-miles from home when the thing stopped working. It wasn't charging, and being so new, the battery was low. I had the luck and sense to realise my Motorola car phone charger has the same plug and similar voltage - I insterted this and the unit charged and worked ok again. But I really shouldn't have to resort to such Macgyver tactics...I like the product overall, evident by the fact this is my second. But I had to drop the stars down, mainly due to the charger problem out the box. I'll be contacting TomTom for a new one since it's still clearly under warranty.
I bought the TomTom One to replace my Garmin that was stolen. It works great and has some great features my old one didn't have, like map browsing where you can actually look at the map. It recalculats quickly when a turn is missed. And maps are updated regularly for a subscription price of $19.99/yr (compared to $80 from Garmin for occasional updates.) Features the Garmin had that I miss: The auto night/day screen, and the convenient volumn control on the unit itself. On the TomTom you must touch the screen and search for the light and volume control to change them. For the price though, the TomTom is great.
I just received a refurbished TomTom 3rd Edition (USA & Canada) to give my wife on Mother's Day (2 days from now). I've had excellent luck with refurbished electronics and selected the TomTom over the Garmin Nuvi because of their lower price for map updates. After I installed the TomTom HOME software I updated the unit's firmware, but the "Latest Maps" feature said "not available." Looking around on the TomTom site, I saw a mention that refurb units aren't eligible for Latest Maps. This in spite of there being a card with a code to activate the Latest Maps with my unit - what a cruel joke! When I went to buy the next 4 quarters of map updates for $39.95, it told me that my unit's installed maps were four quarters old and I'd first have to buy last years' set to bring me up to date before I could subscribe to the next four quarters. This would bring the price for the refurb right up to the Amazon price for a new unit. If I weren't attached to giving this to my wife in two days, I'd probably have just packed it up and returned it in favor of a new unit.Instead I called tech support. I got through to "Joe" - a real human - in about a minute, and he gave me a reference number to fax to TomTom along with proof of purchase and the Latest Maps card that was in the box, which I just did. This is a long story (I'm like that) to say, bottom line, if you buy this unit and there's a Latest Maps card in the box, call them and get the free update. It's the only thing that makes the refurb worth the savings.Overall, my experience of their support, website and software has been excellent. If that changes after I've used it for a while, I'll let you know, but so far I'm happy. I rated it 4 stars just to be conservative since I haven't used it much yet.
I purchased this unit last Christmas and have been extremely disappointed. Here are the things I don't like:1- The battery life is poor.2- The online software is buggy3- The directions are frequently wrong...when looking for the Interstate, it has guided us into vacant lots, people's driveways, etc.4- Signal accuracy- I need the unit most when I'm in the city. The TomTom can't distinguish the roads in the city (e.g. they are too close together and the unit thinks you are on Third street when you are on 4th street).5- Documentation is very poor.6- Bootup can take 4 minutes.
