It's a neighborhood thing, mostly--it just depends on what their peers
are doing. The big chrome wheels, 55-series tires, and gigantic
spoilers are a fashion statement/mating display.

It doesn't seem to be working too well though, 'cause I rarely see
these guys accompanied by any femininity in their rides. Or, maybe we
tend to stay out of each other's 'hoods on the weekends.

my hypothesis is that these people think that gas doesn't cost enough,
therefore they have to add huge spoilers to their car to lower their gas
mileage so they can throw even more money away

Maybe a "turbo decal" or a "Type R" on a base civic makes it go faster, I
don't know! :)

On a car like a Lamborghini Countach LP 5000S you can see why a spoiler
would be nessesary to keep the back of the car down if your doing 185 mph,
but on a car that can barely go 125, its just plain dumb.

Your right about the fact that they don't seem to have any women with them,
thats an understatement.

they go way faster than 125 and it is to hold the rear end down which can be
lightweight if the backseat has been removed. he probably had tubo on his.
sometimes it is there for a reason sometimes its not necessary and i hardly
think a hyundai excel can deal with a fast civic.

Yes, because the back seat adds SO much weight to the ass-end of the car!

It's dorkage and it isn't just on japanese cars. Black headlight and tailight
covers, SUVs raised twenty feet in the air but with no extra ground clearence or
dragging on the ground, cars with 10% profile tires that swerve out of control
stopping from 25 mph also qualify. Pretty much any modification that
seriously reduces performance all to "look cool" in the mind of morons is
dorkage.
