What to look for when buying used 98-01 Accord????
My friend wants to buy a Used Accord. I am trying to talk her out of buying the V6, for the VTEC 4cylinder.
Does the V6 need a timing belt change?
I am aware of the differences in the models in earlier years with regards to lx/ex/exr, or lx/dx/ex.
What are the differences in the models of this generation?
What are the idiocyncracies of this generation of Accords?
Thanks in advance for your kind attention.

I will try to handle some of your questions and leave the others for other
posters.
The EX model is better than any of the other models since it has the most
features. For that reason, EX models are more expensive than LX models.
I have a 1999 Honda Accord and have had no problems except for having to
replace an oxygen sensor. Obviously, the O1 model is better than the 98 or
99 model since Honda keeps track of problems found in the 98 and 98 and
corrects those problems in the 00 and 01 models. They might miss some of
the more minor problems.

Re: What to look for when buying used 98-01 Accord????
The V6 engine is superior if you value power and the ability to pass, but
only came in 4 speed auto. IF the V6 transmission was replaced by Honda,
consider it more worthy. There was a TSB on the transmissions as they had
some problems. If the V6 never had the transmission replaced by Honda,
beware.
4 cyl = 150 hp... adequate power
V6 = 200 hp. more than enough, Great passing power, floor it and you are
gone
The highlights....
LX 4 cyl = power everything, all the essentials
EX 4cyl = upgraded cloth compared to LX, moonroof, power everything,
basically everything you could want, I think this came with keyless remote
(not sure on security)
LX V6 = no moonroof, smaller wheels/tires compared to the EX (i think)
Keyless remote
EX V6 = probably comes in leather, I have only seen them in leather, but
they might come in cloth. moonroof, power everything, basically everything
you could want, security system.
Now the styling did change slightly over those years, but they were
cosmetic. I think they changed the wheels as well. Mechanically the same
vehicle over the years.

Re: What to look for when buying used 98-01 Accord????
I've got a 99 Accord EX 4 cyl 5 spd. I test drove both 4 and 6 cyl back
when I bought my car new. The V6 power was nice. Both cars had the same
driving experience to me. I chose the 4cyl because I like to row my own.
I've always like Honda's silky clutch. I've never missed the V6 power. My
Accord has close to 90,000 miles on it. At 72,000 miles the check engine
light came on. The code said bad CAT convertor which was replaced under an
emission warranty. Apparently this is a known issue. I think the 2000/2001
Accords had some minor appearance chances over the 98/99 Accords. The
timing belt should be changed at 105,000 miles on the 4 cyl, I don't know
about the V6. With either car you cannot go wrong. Just make sure it's
checked out thoroughly. My personal preference is the EX model as I like
the moonroof, alloy wheels, and the colour matching body side molding.
There's a couple of other things as well.
Cheers,
Rick
Oh one more thing ...the Emerald Pearl paint on my car while looked great,
chips real easy.

Re: What to look for when buying used 98-01 Accord????
99 accord 4 cyl EX.
Bought car used at 36 K miles-absolutely no problems, but I only have 59K
miles. I contacted previous owner who said car turned in for lease expire.
She had no problems with car.
EX 4 cyl has moon roof, leather seats, power driver seat (only power seat).
A really good car. Currently has ignition switch recall which I don't think
is major.
