what could be wrong with my honda prelude?

my 93 honda prelude starts smellin funny then it starts skippin cuttin out & poppin back & such but it only does it when it starts smellin like that then it starts runnin fine seams to start doing it more though

Get your exhaust looked at. The cutting out and popping back and fourth sounds like a plugged catalytic convertor.

sounds like a timing issue. your distributor shaft may be worn ($150) causing the timing to be off & not burning all the fuel in the cylinders. may also be the timing chain/belt & gears ($250-$500). get a basic tune up & oil change ($50) to start. if that doesnt help spend the $30 & have a shop do a diagnostic to it but dont agree to any service. take the diagnostic to at least 3 shops & ask what they suggest.

Describe the smell (gas, rotten eggs?) and how long after you start the engine before it smells and then how long before it's popping and cracking,
