Lantra 1.8si poor start
I've just started having starting problems with my lantra 1.8si.
It cranks fine and does attempt to fire although very weakly, if you
can't start it during this stage, you have to crank it forever before
it'll burst into life for no apparant reason.
On occasion when cranking it'll lock-up as if it's attempted to fire
in the wrong order and locked.
She runs fine when started. Although (possibly my imagination) doesn't
idle quite as smoothly.
When warm, she still requires a good few cranks to start, whereas
previously, it was a single turn!!
Am I looking at a coil pack/cam shaft sensor problem? Or something
completely different?
Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure its not something simple, like a cracked spark plug lead or
defective spark plug ?
The computer may detect a problem with a failed (or sometimes faulty)
sensor, but that could be a false alarm if theres a simple problem like a
cracked lead.

Ah, that sort of symptom also reminds me of a dirty air filter. Especially
with the problem with warm starting.

Re: Lantra 1.8si poor start
I've had the spark plugs changed and put on the computer at two
Hyundai dealers. They could find nothing wrong, but that was as far as
their diagnostic capabilities went.
If the computer couldn't find anything, they were stumped!!
I was interested with the dirty air filter comment. I'll take a look!
Any further advise would be appreciated.

The Latest,
Took the car to a recommended garage. They found that it was producing
intermittent injector pulses and spark, with no disernable order!!
They suggested that the immobiliser may be interfering in some way, so
i've had this removed but to no avail.
Could this be the ECM?
HELP!

a villainous part on Hyundai's a few years ago was the crankshaft
position sensor. your problem sounds similar.

Re: Lantra 1.8si poor start
Thanks Jim
Changing the crankshaft sensor solved the problem!!
I did note, that on the Hyundai service website (www.hmaservice.com)
that they recommend checking the camshaft sensor and coil pack for
starting problems.
There is no mention of the crankshaft sensor!
I hope this helps someone else.
