Hyundai now uses a transmission fluid called SP-III that replaces the old
ATF+3, 7176 and SP-II fluids used on older models. According to their
tech bulletins, this SP-III lasts longer than the older fluids, and should
be changed every 30,000 miles. It may turn brown before then, and this
is considered normal (as long as it doesn't smell burnt, I guess). The older
ATF+3 and 7176 fluids did break down more quickly, and had to be
replaced every 15,000 miles or 10 months under severe usage (lots of
stop & go driving, short trips, hot weather, etc.).

So you paid for a transmission fluid change that you may have not
really needed, but nothing was hurt in the process except your wallet.

No, SP-III does not replace ATF+3. ATF+3 is a Chrysler spec. and it's never
been designated as the ATF for Hyundai automatic transmissions by HMC.

Every 30,000 miles for "severe" usage conditions.
