Shocks for Late 2006/2007 Sonatas
My late 2006 Sonata drives me crazy going over bumps. It is teeth jarring.
I went into the Augusta, GA dealership and asked the service manager if I
should replace the rear shocks with some cheap shocks so that the car will
bounce over bumps instead of jarring me. He showed me a recall for the
shocks. He says this ia a national recall for 2007s. He said his
dealership's 2007s were on sales hold until the shocks are replaced. The
shocks have not come in yet. The dealership I bought the car from (Atlanta)
called to wish us Happy Thanksgiving. I told the sales guy about it and he
didn't know of the shock problem, nor the sales hold. What gives? I want my
shocks replaced before I have to get new dentures (ha ha). To me, there are
two problems with the rear--one is the shocks and the other is a rattling
noise also when one goes over bumps. It sounds like something is loose back
there. I thought it was the spare tire, but it is not.

Suspension of the Sonata is one of the worst I have seen.

Ha ha ha .... you guys are a riot! :-)
JohnGa - did you not test drive this brand new car? Surely such a terrible
ride would have given pause to the purchase. FWIW when I test drove a 2007
Sonata V6 Limited I found the suspension just right. My Tiburon has
significantly firmer suspension.
Phraph - l will bite - how is the Sonata's suspension one of the worst you
have ever seen? Have you owned or otherwise experienced Sonata suspension?
Best Regards

I do find it a bit jarring over railroad tracks and the like, but on the
streets and highway, not a problem. At highway speeds, it is rather solid.

tires.....what tires at what psi. 17" low aspect ratio tires at 36 pounds or
16 " tourers at 28 lbs???? makes all the difference.......I think there is
some trolling going on here.

Good point. In my case, the 17" at factory pressure of 30 psi. I have no
reason to increase that. Handles too good to screw around with and I only
cross the RR tracks maybe once a week.

Sales hold? They won't sell/deliver a car until the shocks, that have been
use for a long time already, are replaced? That does not seem likely unless
Hyundai is doing things different than Detroit ever did.
What happened to the old "move it off the lot and let the dealer fix it
later attitude?"

I own a Sonata 2006. And being quite happy with the fact that it feels
inside pretty much like my Camry 2004 V6, even with a I4 engine, and
6000 buck less paid for it. But I am always amazed at how rough and
unrefined the suspension is. What makes it even more obvious is that on
smooth road the car seems to float noiselessly. It's not only that the
suspension is noisy like hell even for the smallest crack in the
asphalt, but it shakes you too.

My V6 is 3 months old, and the ride has always been as smooth as silk. I do
get an annoying low frequency rumble from the rear of the vehicle when at
slowish speeds over rougher road surfaces. I don't understand why there are
complaints about jarring, I've never experienced this.
Reading around the forums, there is a fix for the suspension problem now.
Funnily enough, although the whole world recognises the problem, and Hyundai
have issued a fix kit, the principle dealer, service manager and servicing
technician at my dealership claimed not to be able to hear the noise )
However, I have to give Hyundai the thumbs-up. They've agreed to correct the
problem and the customer service has been second to none. My previous Sonata
(2002-2007) was perfect, and I had no cause for complaint or back-up
service.
cheers,
nn

Re: Shocks for Late 2006/2007 Sonatas
If you could look back until Marchyou would find I askedif they were back
to putting "solid tires" on the new Sonata !! HARD tires and if you go
over a speed bump in the parking lot over 3MPH you get the jolt! 17 inch
HARD tires 30 lbs psi. Only complaint about the ccar except for the
25MPG highway

My average is 23.5, but all highway at 70 to 75 mph I'm 26 to 27 mpg.
