If you mean it emits a high pitched whine then my 98 Sonata has the
same problem at first startup each day. I have tried two dealers and
neither can tell me what it may be. The sound starts at 1500 rpm and
stops at 2000rpm. It happens for maybe a minute or two then disappears
for the rest of the day. Happens every day. If you get an answer I
would love to know what it was.

It still had 3.0 liters Mitsubishi engine that year, right?
Well, my problem is quite the opposite: the engine is calm when cold.
It sounds like a motorcycle when hot in the 1500-2200 rpm range.
Especially, when I press the gas pedal. Can I reprogram the cooling
system to cool it more? (Couple of years ago I asked the mechanic to
lower the cooling a little bit, because in the cold climate cooling
indicator was sitting into the blue when running at highway speed).
On the other hand, I discovered that there was no transmission oil.
Adding it didn't fix the problem, though.

Yes... mine is the early 98 model with the 3lt engine.
I guess no transmission oil may have had a little to do with it.
Refilling may be a little too late to prevent the damage.
My car has had ongoing transmission problems since I bought it.
Transmission had to be stripped when it was less than 1 year old as
seals had collapsed. No matter how many times I have leaks repaired
they tend to return within a month or two.
It rattles like a diesel on some days and on other is relatively quiet
- this seems to be sticking lifters (I have had 4 lifters replaced
over the last 18 months but it continues at random so have given up on
that - it did fix the collapsed ones but it continues to rattle some
days).
Sorry I can't be of any help but I guess this is just one of the many
problems of owning an older Hyundai.
