late 90's Grand Cherokee oil change

I, along with my nephew recently did an oil change on a late 90's (98-99 i think) and it went well. the only thing is that even after hours of looking, i could not find out the amount of oil that should be placed into the engine. In the end i ended up putting in a large jug and about 1/3 of another one(approx 7L). when checking the dip stick it was coated to the save line, and the truck has been running fine. I simply wanted to check with other more knowlegable Car guys/gals if there is a standard or formula for each engine type/brand. thank you in advance for any and all feedback.

no real formula really weird when it comes to oil....for example a Jeep v8 engine take 5 quarts while the V6 engine takes 6 quarts...one would think it would be the other way....in any case 7L is waaaaaaaaaay too much
