well me myself personally havent witnessed any major accidents like that myself but hear about em fairly often. I have however been in cars a bunch of times where who ever was driving doesnt put it in the right gear or forgets which gear hes in and goes the wrong direction, nothing major but enough to hit something or somebody if they were standing in the way. Not only do standard trannys give you more control over the vehicle they keep you on your toes.
