Old Mercedes-Benz SL almost upstages new one in Detroit
As auto show extravaganzas go, it would be hard to beat the presentation that Mercedes-Benz put at a swanky hotel last night to formally introduce its new SL to America. The only problem is the original car may have upstaged the new one.
The old one was the original 1952 Mercedes-Benz SL, for "super light." At the Westin Cadillac Book Hotel in Detroit, one of the originals was driven out on the stage after a careful explanation that the model is so rare that one barn find in unrestored condition sold for more than $2 million. Mercedes officials looked relieved when the SL was able to drive across the stage, and wasn't backed into the brand's zillion-dollar video display that had been set up in the giant presentation hall.
