Toshiba Portege R100 (Pentium M 1GHz, 256MB RAM) 40GB

Toshiba's latest ultraportable offering, the R100, sports a wafer-thin footprint and sleek metallic design that we have come to expect from its line of Portege notebooks. Like its 2010 predecessor, the R100 comes standard with a 12.1-inch LCD monitor and 256MB of memory. What's new is the Centrino label, comprising a 900MHz Pentium M processor, Intel 855PM chipset and integrated 802.11b wireless LAN. Unfortunately, while the notebook also includes a larger 40GB hard drive and improved Trident graphics engine, it does not include an optical drive in the price.

Update:

According to Toshiba Singapore, the list price of the Portege R100 has been reduced to S$2,999 (US$1,576). A non-Centrino version of the R100 is also available at S$2,699 (US$1,205).

Design
Toshiba Porteges are known for their slick, ultracompact form factor, and the R100 continues this trend with its super-thin 19.8mm thick chassis and sub-1.1kg dimensions. Combined with a cool-looking magnesium case, it's a notebook that's not just extremely portable but one that the user will be very proud to tote around.

Despite its petite size, the R100 is surprisingly rugged. Its metallic lid comes is pretty scratch-resistant, and everything from the palm rest and keyboard to the hinge holding the LCD monitor feels sturdy. Toshiba has even designed the laptop with an all-black interior that is harder to stain. A two-latch design keeps the lid tightly closed during transportation. A nice touch to the design here is its add-on extended battery. Unlike some machines which require a physical change of batteries to use the extended power option, the additional battery for the Portege can be used together with the primary powerpack to provide up to a rated 8.5 hours of socket-free usage on a full charge. Interestingly, the extra battery actually props the keyboard up in such a way that makes it more comfortable to type.

Features
One of the things missing in the R100 package is an optical drive. While we aren't expecting one built into the machine, considering its wafer-thin dimensions, we were slightly disappointed not to see an external unit included. Those looking to import video footage from their camcorder or connect to an external FireWire peripheral device will also be let down by the lack of an IEEE1394 port (which is not also on the optional port replicator).

Otherwise, the R100 is actually pretty well-equipped for such a small notebook. Besides the integrated wireless LAN which comes by default of its Centrino status, the Portege also sports two standard USB 2.0 ports, modem and Ethernet connectivity, and a VGA-out for hooking up to an external display. The machine features a dedicated Secure Digital (SD) card slot as well as a PC Card slot that lets you add Bluetooth or even FireWire ports.

Compared to other ultraportables tested, the R100's 12.1-inch LCD is relatively sharp and comes with an 8-level brightness control, so users have the flexibility to increase the backlight for use in outdoor conditions. Alternative, the screen brightness can be tuned down to save battery power. Wireless LAN can be turned on or off by a switch, a nifty feature that does away with the need to access the utility from the operating system. We strongly advise investing in a pair of external speakers for good MP3 playback as the single tiny speaker located at the bottom of the notebook has a limited volume range.

Performance
Like the Sony Vaio PCG-TR1, the Portege R100 is powered by a 900MHz Ultra Low Voltage Pentium M processor and 256MB of memory. Its MobileMark score of 119, though not as fantastic as speedier machines like the Acer TravelMate 803LCi, underlines the R100's claim as a capable machine for most common applications.

The 111min grade in BatteryMark tests, however, was rather disappointing as we had expected better battery performance from the Centrino upgrades. Fortunately, the Portege came with an extra battery which can be used with the primary battery to bump it up to 6.5 hours of normal usage. As with most Toshiba notebooks these days, the R100 includes a proprietary power management application. This allows users to optimize battery life by choosing different power settings (such as screen brightness and processor speeds and standby times) based on their usage.

Service And Support
In addition to Windows XP Professional and Adobe Acrobat Reader, the R100 comes pre-installed with Toshiba Console. This notebook utility is intuitive and useful for controlling almost all the features in the machine, including power management, hotkey assignment, hardware configurations, network and security. First-time users who have problems connecting to the Internet can also make use of the ConfigFree application to troubleshoot network problems.

Toshiba covers the R100 with a three-year international warranty that includes both parts and services. The batteries are guaranteed from manufacturing defects for a year. On the manufacturer's Web site, you can also find a well-organized collection of driver downloads, FAQs and notebook tips. Those looking for help can either call the service hotline, use the online email support, or seek assistance through Ask Iris, an interactive troubleshooting application.
