is it bad to start your motorcycle in the winter?
I've been starting my bike every once in a while ... kind of like my lawn mower ... during the cold months ... I was told this is bad and could crack the heads ... that doesn't make sense to me, but thought I'd ask

Only starting and not driving is not good, moisture will collect inside the block and might corrode parts. Either winterize it or drive it once a month. In my opinion, driving is the only real option, winterizing is for whuzzes.

whoever told you that ain't gonna work on any of my machines!! many people ride their bikes in the winter,, but what do you mean by starting it?? if it is in running condition then theres no problem.. as a matter of fact its good to run it!! circulate the oil, charge the batteries etc,,, heck,, hop on and go for a ride if the suns out and roads are clear!!!

No, but it would be recommended to shut the fuel petcock off and let the bike run till it dies, then the next time you start it crank it for 30 secs or so, to pump oil to the top-end of you motor before you turn the fuel on and crank it up...this will keep the varnish from old evaped gas from building up in your carbs, and keep wear down in your engines bearings and top end
