I love the new R6. it looks way better then the Suzuki and has a screaming top end. Everyone has A GSX-R i would go with the Yami for looks, top speed and just to be different. To be honest both these bikes are almost excatly the same in terms of performance so i would get the one that looks better and has a higher redline. Go with the Yamaha. Not to mention that the insurance on the GSX-R is the highest in the country.

The YZF600R and the GSX-R600 are not direct competitors. The GSX-R600 (and Yamaha's R6) are supersport 600s, tuned to a fine edge. Both of them are commonly sold as beginner bikes by those with questionable ethics. Both of those bikes (even though they're "only" 600s) have a power-to-weight ratio, powerband, and handling that will be very difficult for a beginner to handle. Ask Jayson Williams, of the Chicago Bulls. He bought an R6 and wrapped it around a tree within two weeks, ending his NBA career. The YZF600R, on the other hand, is based off an R6 from a generation or two back. The motor is going to be less highly tuned, which means that it's going to be easier to handle. The ergonomics (seat/handlebar/peg relationship) are quite a bit more comfortable, too. And it costs dramatically less. And is stolen less. And it still looks racy.Go with the YZF, don't forget to budget money for gear, and take the MSF course, at a minimum. Wouldn't hurt to pick up a copy of "Proficient Motorcycling," too.
