besides the price i would buy a KX100, unless you buy used... these bikes are fast, and sometimes race in the 125cc class. plus 2 strokes are the best to learn on because you will learn to carry speed, and momentum. plus you can always bore it out to a higher cc, goodluck!

Under $1000 is going to be something older, and stay local, no one is going to ship you a $1000 bike for free. This is an add from my local paper:'91 YAMAHA YZ125, rebuilt from crank up '06, 5-hrs. on new Michelin tires, yellow RM fenders, shocks redone, $1000. OBO'90 KAWASAKI KX125, 8-hrs. on tops & bottoms end, $1000. OBO Good luck...

Well I have a 2001 yamaha ttr 125

I love the bike,
its a 4-stroke so no gas mixing, smooth powerband
quiet so u wont annoy the neighborers
I would say get a 4-stroke because of the maintenances especially when u are trying to find something cheap. Cheap is older and 2-strokes u need to rebuilt much more than 4-strokes
To find something under 1000, I would say a 100cc will be a good median between age and power. 100ccs usually have an auto clutch (so does anything ssmaller) 125cc + are clutched.
