How do i remove the starter from a 1982 kawasaki kz 440 ltd?

The starter is easy to remove, but tough to install. There are two bolts with 10mm heads that hold it in. (The long screws are for taking the starter apart.) It uses a chain drive from the starter to the starter clutch and when you remove the starter, the chain and sprocket fall down. I was able to install one once, but that was out of 50 tries. You will probably need to remove the left side engine cover.So. Unbolt the starter and remove it. Either buy a new one or pull it apart and rebuild it. (Turn down armature and replace brushes. Maybe the front seal too if it's got oil in the starter.) Drain your engine oil. Remove the left side engine cover. Clean it all up good. Install the starter making sure to line up the sprocket on the starter shaft. Install a new gasket. Install the cover screws. Fill with oil and go for a ride.P.S. If your starter clutch makes noise, the time to repair it is when the cover is off!
