Any 250 water cooled and up. But i would having him riding 250 Bike first. So much more control. Quads are like riding on ice once you hit 60 km/hr it more counter steering then actual control. The first large rock you hit at 60km/hr is when you see the real difference. bike will ride straight over the rock with only little discomfort quad you will be on your bum with a 200kg machine on top of you. I have both and i would not put a 14 year old on the quad without Adult supervision. Quad of this size you should be licensed or 18 years. I would buy 110cc quad 3 or 4speed Top speed 60km/hr so much more control due to size and weight just over 100kg this will do him for a least 2 years at least you will know that the damage to him self should be limited

I have a 125 yamaha dirtbike and my uncle has a 350 honda ATV
they are fairly evenly matched but the kicker is the dirtbike has a clutch vs my uncles dosn't so i can smoke him.

With regards to a bike vs atv. Ive hit rocks with my dirtbike and with the ATV. When it comes to comfort and control, I would say its better hiting a rock with a atv(the rock is maybe less than 1 foot by 1 foot) vecase u have 3 other wheels to control with. I ve hit rocks pretty small with my bike and it really can be dangerouse because u loose the front wheel(washout) ur screwed or the back u can still dump the bike.

The problem with the quads I would say is in emergencies. In an emergensy braking senario u can lay the bike on its side to avoid say hitting a tree. Where the atv can only use its brakes and slide. I have first hand experience with this. My body entered a corner to fast on my uncles ATV and paniced and slid into a tree, rolled into down a cliff into a ravine. he was OK luckly, but it was bad. I came arpund the corner and was able to rear brak only and skid the bike to a stop while "drifting" sort of.
