Kawasaki Ninja 250 - would be an excellent 'starter' for you.

Relatively light, E/Z to handle, & looks "Bad-@ss"...!!!!!

Get a Honda Rebel for starters. That's the best beginner's bike, and they usually use them at the safety course. (Cheap too)

After you get used to it, get a bigger one.

DO NOT start with a big bike or a sports bike. There is too much power that you have to learn to control first, otherwise it can be catastrophic.

Several people have already recommended the Virago, and that is a good choice as a beginner bike. In fact, that is exactly what my girlfriend rides. She is 5-6 and 105 pounds. Your height is not as important as your inseam length. If you can easily reach the ground and "flat foot" a slightly larger bike, and if you feel you have the strength and confidence to handle a larger bike, a 500cc to 750cc cruiser might be a good starter bike for you. One thing I can guarantee you is that you will quickly outgrow a Virago 250.

Regardless of what bike you decide on, I highly recommend buying a good used one. There are lots of 250 to 750cc bikes on eBay and if you shop around you can get a good deal. Now is actually a great time to buy since Spring and Summer are the high seasons and bikes get higher prices then.

Good luck and ride safe!

Most women I have dealt with in your height and weight range tend to stick with the smaller bikes if they have never really ridden before. The Honda Rebel, Suzuki GZ250, and Buell Blast are the more frequent ones to start off with and are usually the ones used in the training classes. Most places use a combo of the Honda and Suzuki while Harley's course uses the Blast. A Ninja is a sport bike but is still a good starter if you want to go in the sport bike area and a Sportster would probably be a little too heavy for you to learn on...
