2008 Cruise Around the Lake May 31st

Firehawks of Wisconsin and Project Camaro announce the 2008 Cruise Around the Lake for Firebirds and Camaros. This will be a fairly leisurely drive around Lake Winnebago on Saturday, May 31st. Departure will be right after the Driver's meeting at 10:00am.
This is scheduled as a Rain or Shine event. If anybody shows up, it will commence. Anybody in any Camaro or Firebird of any style or year from any state or country is welcome to participate. There are no fees or charges, and cannot be any. You will need enough funds for fuel to complete 110 miles, please be fueled up before arriving. There will be a fuel stop about halfway through.
This Cruise is a planned route, with frequent breaks, with about 3 hours of drive time covering about 110 miles. Will likely wrap up about 3 pm. For those familiar with the F-Body Spring and Fall cruises, there will be some similarities. Like those, the route and stops are planned, we try to maintain a group, and try to avoid traffic lights and heavy traffic - this is so visiting drivers do not need to be familiar with the area, and need not fear getting lost. Unlike those, we cannot avoid the cities of Oshkosh, Neenah, Menasha, Appleton, and Fond Du Lac and we do not have an abundance of curvy, hilly, twisty, open country roads. We will minimize our exposure to traffic lights in these cities, favoring shoreline views and lakeshore streets, and also minimize major highways in the same way. We will be on the West and North side of the lake before noon, and on the East side after noon. The final section of the lakeside roads becomes obstructed by vegetation, so we then divert to a few twisty roads, more open driving slightly away from the lake. The drive is not competitive, largely scenic, and the lead car will not be speeding.

Route Directions:
http://www.projectcamaro.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=22684
Some of the mileage notations might not be accurate, but will be verified and updated in the weeks before the Cruise.

My phone # for this day will be (608) 577-8083.
We will meet at Lakeside Park in Fond Du Lac, on the Lakeshore by the Gazebo, Pavilion, and Shelter. Arrival at this portion of the Park can be via the Main St or N. Park Street entrances, and just follow the path. If parking is crowded, more on-street parking is allowed to the west (driving with lake on your right), on Frazier Drive (go where sign says "Road Closed to Thru Traffic." Both Park and Main St have a traffic light, and a park entrance sign is erected at the traffic light for Main St..
Probably the easiest directions are this: From Highway 41 take Exit 95 to Hwy 151 NORTH (this exit a few miles south of Hwy 151 South exit), go north on Hwy 151 for 7.8 miles to Hwy WH traffic light, and turn LEFT onto Winnebago Drive, then 3.7 or 4.0 miles and turn RIGHT on either N. Park or Main St to enter Lakeside Park.
Coming from the East on Hwy 23? Then turn RIGHT onto Hwy 151 before entering Fond Du Lac, going North for 2.9 miles until the Hwy WH traffic light mentioned above.
Coming from Madison or Waupun on Hwy 151? You will need to go South on Hwy 41 a few miles to Exit 95 for the new Hwy 151 NORTH mentioned above.
From Milwaukee, take Hwy 45 north from I-94, until Hwy 45 becomes Hwy 41 and then stay on 41 another 35 miles until Exit 95 for Hwy 151 NORTH mentioned above. This is 57 miles from I-94 in Milwaukee to Exit 95.
Others may wish to use shorter, quicker routes, but the roadsigns and traffic are less simple.

We will use the Protocol posted here:
http://springcruise.fallcruise.org/protocol.html
An addition to that is Using Directional Signals (blinkers). If you see Cruise vehicles ahead of you with their turn signals on, please activate yours as well. This helps all following cars during turns, even if they cannot see the lead cars.
We also have a round-a-bout intersection on our route. If not familiar with this right-of-way, please read up on it.
It is most helpful if participants bring an FRS radio. They can be obtained at many stores like target, bestbuy, walmart, for under $20 easily. The Motorolas seem to have the best range.

It is not a certainty that every park we stop at will have the water turned on yet. For this reason, you might consider bringing along a jug of water and/or paper towels for washing.

Lake Winnebago is the 3rd largest natural freshwater lake completely within a U.S. state, after Lake Okeechobee (Florida) and Red Lake (Minnesota). It covers 137,708 acres (557 sq km) and is 28 miles long and 10.5 miles wide. Although part of the Great Lakes watershed, it is too small to be a Great Lake (Ontario is 19,529 sq km).

After completion, if some drivers are interested, the afternoon stop of the F-Body Spring Cruise is less than 10 min away, and we can go there to enjoy some twisty roads from the various versions of the last 4 Spring Cruises (plus other roads).

Headcount.
No registration exists, and posting here does not obligate you in any way. For the purposes of planning and coordination, it is easier to cross off a name from a preprinted list than write a bunch of new names on a blank sheet.
I'll be there. Who else?

1. Ron, 2002 black Firehawk convertible.
2. Jesse, 1993 red Firehawk.
3. Danny, 2000 black Firehawk with Lumpy.
4. Blu & Lynn, 2002 NBM Firehawk convertible.
5. Paul, 2000 NBM Firehawk.
6. Chuck, 1999 red Firehawk.

Despite constant forecasts for rain, on Saturday morning no mention of rain was in the forecast. Not a drop of rain was seen the entire day or that night.

A total of 4 Firehawks were present, all of them 2002 vintage, plus a 3rd gen Formula came along. For some reason, not a single Camaro joined us.

Below, one of our stops, l-r are my #796, the black 3rd gen, Henry's red #1139 - Judy rode along with him, leaving her vert Hawk at home, and Blu & Lynn's NBM vert #1252, and Chad's black 1042.

Thanks to all who came out. I had a lot of fun, and got a bunch of sun.
I forgot to get contact info from the 3rd gen Formula guys, so I hope they contact me.

You ended up having a great day for it. If it would have been a bit closer I might have tried to make it. Maybe next time.
