It may not be a real Formula 1 race car, but it sure drives like one. A group of about 17 students from U of T are the proud designers of a small sports car that's about to be put to the test in its first real race next week in Detroit.

The vehicle goes from zero to 100 km in just three seconds and it can reach 180 clicks. It's even good on gas. In terms of fuel efficiency, a driver can get mileage of up to 100 km from 22 litres of petro. "The acceleration you can experience on this is probably better than any roller coaster I've been on," said one team member.

Building the race car has been a year-long work in progress for the hard-working group. The team designed 95 per cent of the vehicle and included a cockpit dash with LEDs that indicate engine speed, water temperature and oil and fuel pressure.

Team member Neil Persaud is 6"2 and in order to get behind the wheel he has to know how to get out in under five seconds in case of an emergency. The group is also headed to a competition in England next July and so far they've finished in the top spot in three out of their last four races.
