Cars with cages?

Anyone have a cage in there street car?

Does your insurance company know about it?

If not, will they not pay for a claim if the y find out you put a cage in it?

Do the police bother you?

Any other thoughs?

Cages scream 'racecar'.. I don't know of ANY insurance company (even specialized ones) that will insure a caged car for road use. In the event of an accident, cages can actually prove to be more dangerous, as there's more likelihood of the vehicle occupants being injured from impact with the cage.

Also, if you don't disclose the existance of a cage to your insurance company and have an accident, it's very likely that your policy will be deemed null&void, and you will be liable for any damages ensuing from the collision.

There's no real reason for a street car to have a cage in it.. if mine ever got to the point of requiring a cage, it would be retired to track-only/trailer queen duty. Until then, my subframe connectors, g-load brace and strut tower brace will have to do.

cages should only be used when you have a helmet on because in a collision you head will crack open against the cage like a watermelon hitting the ground. unless your going to get your groceries with a helmet on, i'd skip the cage and spend the money on something else.

In my opinion ppl who put cages in street cars are just trying to look fast. u dont need a cage unless ur running ur car on the track. i guess some ricers just think its cool to add some more weight to their stock interior.

Okay, I know it's been a while. My car has a 6 point cage in it and your head doesn't come in contact with the cage at any point. The car is used mostly for the track but is still street legal. I take it for cruises once in a while. The cage was installed more to stiffen the chassis more than anything.

This is also a hot topic on a Buick board. installing a cage in a rare and valuable car kills the value, on the other hand, hitting the wall at 130 mph without a cage an proper saftey equipment does not sound like a lot of fun...

the issue of insurance is a real problem

It appears that even silver wheel insurance does not provide coverage to your car if you install a cage and are invovled in any racing activities. So keep that in mind.
I will not be installing a Cage, for the amount of track time my car will see I'd rather keep the value of the car and it's still sorta possible to return the car to stock.

How fast are the cars with cages in them? There is a Buick guy that just ran 9.68 without a cage, got kicked off the track and is not to return with out all required safety equpment....

Well there are alot that drive on the street and race at the track. Not having a roll bar limits you to 11.50 and slower.
There are alot of true street driven cars that can reach that number with ease. Even brand new unmodified cars like the Z06 can run quicker than that.
So what you are saying is once some one hits 11.49 it can no longer be a street driven car? Because with out a bar you cant run it at the track.

i personally really like the look of roll cages in cars, and honestly, why not have it. in my opinion its another peice of mind no mater what. im gonna have one put in my eclipse soon to actually! how many times dose something go wrong mechaniclly that can put ur car upside down? snaped tie rod end? tire somehow falls off? chances of this are unlikely.but it dose happen! so why not!

I don't think it should matter either way. Who cares. If you have a cage, then great, if not, that's great too. However if you enjoy racing your sub 11.50 streetcar at the racetrack. Enjoy your cage.

And who ever said that your head would make contact with cage...The 6 point cage in my car is at least 5-6 inches behind the headrest.

when your car is rolling over, then tell me if you still have 6 inches between your head and the cage.

Well, if you are using your harness on the street and have an accident, then your ins company can and probably will void your policy and leave you hanging.

Nice Catch 22, car insurance is.
