Do I need insurance?

I am 18 with G2 living with my parents. We have only one car.
Do I need to be added to my father's policy if I am not going to drive his car?
Also, can I drive my gf's car under her insurance?
Thanks

Thanks for response, that is what I was afraid of and I don't think it is fair. Is it based on law or insurance companies are just trying to make money where ever possible?
I am admited in McGill U in Montreal and physically will not be around the car that I am not going to drive anyway the most of the year. Would it qualify for any exception?
