vr6 or 1.8t

so i got a crazy deal i bought a 1999.5 jetta new body style for 800 bucks and all i had to do was a headgasket um the question i got is ive been in a vr6 golf and i think that i might swap a 6 out of something else or find a 1.8 turbo cause i heard there a good engine stock im just not thinkin theres much point in building a 2 litre cause there isnt much potential just lookin for advice from someone who knows alot about vw's ive been around cars my whole life but only domestics and these vws are a little funny to work on so is it worth my while to find a vr6 and swap everything over or a 1.8 or just sell and buy one with it already in it i know where theres a like a mid 90's passat with the vr6 for cheap would this engine work?

Well, with that body, I'd go with the VR. The car is heavy to begin with, so the VR is not going to upset the handling. You'll get more torque from the VR, but it's easier to get more horsepower from a 1.8t. It all comes down to what you want the car to do. Do you want a decent street car, with a mild build, or do you want a street/strip car, or do you want a full autocross/road race, or a drag car?

I had a VR6 in that body style... Great reliable motor w/ lots of torque... You can't go wrong IMO...

But a 180 HP 1.8T isn't bad either... Depends on what you like. The VR is plenty fast to get you into trouble quick tho.

i would go 1.8T over vr6 12v alothough it depends what you are looking for. the turbo can give you serious hp with some bolt ons. but the vr6 is a torque monster, just go with the first reliable engine you find, both good choices though

With these gas prices go with 1.8T. upgrade downpipe, intercooler, intake, heck even throw in a larger turbo. Good on gas and reliable. You can't go wrong with that loud pshhhhh noise with the BOV when your shifting also.

IMO the VRs have had bit more problems espicially injectors.

Well since you have a mk4 Jetta, it isnt worth putting in an older motor into a newer car. If you are planning on swapping in a VR6, go to the states and pick up a 24v VR6..Decently quicker then the 12v VR6 we get here and you can find them for cheap in the states.

Either swap is going to involve a new motor, a tranny(if you go with a VR6), wiring harness, etc.

Plus its easier to find a 1.8T now a days then a MK4 VR6..

go for the 1.8T, getting power out of them is easier, and they're easier on your wallet.
