is an audi better than a bmw

Dont get an S4. Waste of time and alot more expensive then any BMW.
B5 S4's only come with 250HP(round 190awhp). They are hard to work on because there is no space, turbo's have to be replaced every 150xxxKM which means you have to drop the motor to do the turbo's. Rear Diff's are weak if not properly maintained. BMW's on the other hand cost more to insure, they arent cheap to modify, they arent great winter cars, they are expensive to maintain, blahh too much money.
If you want an all year round car pick up a used B5.5 A4(something like a 2003-2004) 1.8T and be done with it. Get in stick because Automatic's blow and they are slow as hell.
The Quattro system is pretty good, not alot of issues with the drivetrain. Overall you can mod a A4 alot more then a BMW for ALOT less.

i just fukcing love idiots that grab a 318 BMW and think they're hot because they're driving a BMW .
as for your question ... just keep in mind that a used Turbo car, could become a larger expense in the long run

I had my A4 out at Dunnville a few weeks ago against a pair of 05 BMW 325is', and in the wet, I was walking all over them. I was picking up 7-8 seconds a lap. I want to go back in April on the dry and see what it is like in those conditions. I will say that the A4 is a nose heavy car that understeers like a pig, but in the wet it was great, because if it started to understeer, you just give it a little more gas, and the backend comes right back around where you need it.
The Quattro system is something you need to experience. I love the fact that on a morning where we get 8-10 inches of snow I can just hop in my Audi and drive off as if the roads were bare. The only time I ever get the tires slipping is when I am having a bit of fun and trying to get the back end loose.
When I was looking for a new car, I looked at the BMWs as well, and once I got behind the wheel of the A4 I knew I had made the right choice. The Interior is more refined than the BMW, and it is a car that you can do a tonne to without dropping 25-30k

I had a guy in a mustang 5.0 comment on my A4 the other day, we had lined up at a set of lights and I figured I would have a little fun with him, we took it to the next set of lights, he rolled down his window and said "wow, you must have been pushing it hard to keep ahead of me" to which I replied "I was shifting at 4000RPM, I still had another 2000RPM to go before redline in any of the gears"
BMW Drivers think they are better than everyone else because they own a BMW, well unfortunately its not true. most BMW Drivers think they are gods gift, and I cant stand that pompous arrogant attitude.

The engine does have to come out though, but you have to remember that even on the 1.8T A4, you need to remove the front end (including rad support) to change a serpentine belt. That's the caveat of the drivetrain layout.
There's not such thing as a B5.5 A5, especially for model years 2003-2004. B5 is from 1996 to 2001, B6 is 2002 to 2005. Maybe you were talking about 1999 and under models... which have the better engine but more dated interior. 2000 to 2001 has the worse engine (significantly smaller intake ports) but nicer interior and updated front and rear lights, among other things. The 1999.5 model is the best because it has the older engine, and the updated interior and exterior.
