I just got this 250watt amp. its nothing special, but has this input labelled "Remote". The guy I bought this off of said that this was to connect to the "remote" output on the deck. this option is to tell the amp that the deck is on/off so that the amp can activate appropriately. Currently, im using a tape deck () so i connect my mp3 player to it. the tape deck doenst have the "remote" wire, so the amp won't know when to turn off, so my battery will get drained eventually. Is there any way i can make a circuit to make up for the lack of the remote wire? Like i was thinking taking the power input on the deck and wiring it to a switch, then using the switch, it will tell the amp that the deck is on/off, but that would mean giving the amp an addition 12v's... so wouldnt it blow up

Buy a new deck. I can't remember if you can just send 12 volts to the remote turn on or not. You'll be happier with a $200 CD/MP3 deck from future shop or somewhere anyway.

Hey, some amps have the speaker level inputs where u dont need the remote turn on wire, maybe check out ur amp to see if u have that...

double check that there isnt a blue turn on wire behind the radio....or possible a blue/white turn on wire

if you have a power antenna u can wire the remote turn on wire to ur power antenna lead...

or the very last resort, u can probably wire it up to another source of switched 12volt power....(cig lighter etc)??

simple..run the remote wire from the radio fuse to your amp. the guys at car audio haven used this method.

i cant really buy a new deck yet. i need the cash for other repairs, but as soon as i get some extra cash im gonna get that mp3 one and alpine components... but i need music when im driving lol, so this is better than nothing i guess (car came with no speakers lol).

i can wire in the deck's power wire to the "remote" thing on the amp, but then the amp will be getting two 12v power lines, so wouldnt that blow it up? i was also thinking about adding a switch between the main 12v input power source of the amp and the battery, so i can control whether it gets power or not

bo55_man, i dont really get what you mean, because i dont have a radio wire

heyy .. even if u add a switch in between the amps main power (from battery) to the amp it still needs a away of being turned on (the remote switch wire)...

butt u see on ur amp the "high input r/l".....if u have the connector for that...some amps actually use this signal from the deck [speaker outputs] as a way of getting an audio signal + turning the amp on...

in turn replacing the need for a remote turn on wire andd the rca cable from the amp going to the pre-out on ur deck (which i cant tell from the picture if that deck actually has one so this might be ur only way of getting an audio signal to the amp anyhow)..hope this helps...

All you need to do guy is just run a wire from the (power wire) + red on your tape deck (never knew they were around still) in doing that the amp would turn on when the key is turn on.....

its simple just put a switch with the power wire from your cig lighter and send it to the amp but make sure to turn off the switch when your not using it, cause if its an older car and you leave it overnight the battery will be drained by the next morning because power will still be flowing through the main board on the amp.

What car do you drive?

Most Amp/Deck/etc have three power connections. (+) (-) (remote)
(+) = battery, always on
(-) = ground

Remote = "turn on when I say" -usually when the car is turned on

ok.. most cars have many positions to the keys. like off-acc-on-start
different things turn on when its in different positions. usually the radio turns on with "acc" or "on".

In most cases a car will have two "power" wires going to the radio, one is batt and one it remote (or KEY, or ACC etc. ) and that would be the one you would tie your Remote (REM) to... but you said that your car doesn’t even have a radio stock, so you have no remote (or KEY or ACC) wire in behind the radio.

You have two solutions:
1) put a switch between remote and (+) either at the battery, or right at the amp. Note, you radio only has (+) and (-) so it will be always on. but if you put a switch between (+) and battery, then you will lose your presets (if it has them, or your clock, if it has one, if there is no clock and no presets, then just use the same switch.

2) find something in your car that turns on with the car, ether ACC or just ON. then tie the remote to that "thing". Note, you don't want to also tie your tape deck to it, because the tape deck will use too much power. You have to have a switch on the tape deck, or always have it on, either way you will have to remember to turn it off.

If it was me: I will find that thing that turns on only when the car is on, and I will connect it to the amp’s REM. And try just connecting (+) and (-) of the tape deck to (+) and (-) of the battery, and see if it drains power when you hit the off switch. Why? Cause you will remember to turn off the deck, cause it’s playing music, but the amp would be silently draining power if only the deck was off.

hmm, sounds good guys. thanks for the help. the car is a 1992 civic si hatch.
one thing i sorta dont get is that the amp has a main ground and power input, so thats where it recieves its 12v power from. but, does the remote input of the amp also give it another 12v's? meaning that it is now recieving 24 volts ?! or does the remote's 12v's just function as a on/off switch and does not provide power to the amp?

the remote wire acts as an on and off switch for the amp right your ignition wire on the back of the radio is only live when the car is on right so try hooking those up thatt should solve ur problem if not hook it up to the 12 volt constant at the back of the radio and put that wire o a switch an 18 gauge wire should b suffiecient.

The amp draws very little power from the REM wire... it's just there to sense if it should be turned on or not... if it sees +12v (or something close) it turns on...

Just get a spade connector.. and plug it into your fuse panel.. there's bound to be a part time empty socket ( that will get power ONLY when the car is on / accessories on )..

so anytime the key is turn to on or on accessories.. the amp will turn on ( whether or not your player is plugged in ) but your car usually will be runnin so you won't have to worry bout power draw.

In the future.. when you do get a new deck.. just remove the spade connector and rewire it to the remote on the new deck.. and since the wires already run to the amp.. all you have to worry bout is the head unit wiring and install

Its easier then rippin the current deck out just to solder/Splice/crimp a wire.. sounds like too much work for me..
