Without getting too complicated, this is how i'll explain it.
You have two main peices in a rear end. The Carrier (Posi or open) which controls which wheel has the tq, in an open carrier, it only uses one wheel, which is more efficent. In a posi, it uses both wheels, which will get power to the ground much more effectively.
The ring and pinion (gears) have nothing to do having an open or posi carrier, gears can be put in either of them just the same.
To "Make something posi" you would have to buy a posi carrier, which new retails for around $600.
Unless you are doing massive power numbers, or want to leave two black marks instead of one when doing a burnout, there is no reason to have a posi on a v6.

come on phate. theres no way you could realistically do the job in an hour. maybe if you got the perfect car and all the races came right out and the bearings pressed right off, ya know no stubborn parts. also the backlash needs to be set.
im sorry but theres no way. my first time it took me 4 hours. second time it took me 2 and that was without messing with backlash.
btw where i used to work labor rate was 85/hr. book time is 4 hours. 340 is the cost of labor and cali is rediculously high for labor rates. so you got no discount, and had to pay cali price

I've done it enough on fbodies, that 1 hr is pretty much a joke.
Now, keep in mind, im doing it on MY car, which ive done many times before. Not to mention that means there are going to be no stuck bolts, or ceased bearings, etc. Easy out, easy in.
Now, for instance, if you're doing it on a car where you have to switch the carrier and put the new ring on it, and maybe put the ABS spline on there too...

3.08 and lower is a 2 series carrier, Anything higher are a 3 series carrier which I understand require a posi (lsd) to work. MOST auto V6s come stock with 3.08s unless u have an RS/y87 package then you have 3.42s and lsd. 5speeds come stock 3.23s/lsd.

It took my guy about 1.5 hours to do my gear install and the only reason it took that long is because he kept double checking the backlash to make sure it was perfect.
Oh and he only charged me $100
His name is Tom and if you ever want him to work on your car just click on the banner on the right that says Bad LS1 Tuning.

all autos either had 3.23s or 2.73's. 3.23 and up is a 3 series carrier. anything lower is 2 series. you can install larger gears like 3.73s or 4.10s into a 2 series but you need the thicker gears that are made to put into specifically a 2 series rear end.

haha this guy was like 85 years old and it probly really would take him that long to do. hes owned this place called the dyno shop by my house since my dad was a kid. my dads like 56 now. he sat down with me and called like 10 different people and wrote down prices for everything. it was like 700 in parts or somethin. i still have the quote somewhere...maybe ill find it later
