2nd Gear Grind

What would cause a second gear only grind? Whenever I shift into 2nd it grinds very badly. No other gear grinds at any time. It only grinds while the car is in motion. Any ideas??

Not 100% sure... could be the clutch or the slave cyl.

for it to be the clutch or slave cylinder, it would most likely do it in all the gears not just one. it sounds like your second gear syncros are going bad, you will have 2 get the transmission rebuilt to correct the problem.

werd. of course i'd change the fluid first. always smarter to try the cheaper things first if youre going to start throwing parts at it.

If all it needed was a fluid change, wouldn't it grind in all the gears??

well if your 2nd gear synchro is wearing more than others and your fluid is getting dirty, 2nd gear would grind before the others.

just a theory...

grinding noises from any part of a car are hard to give a quess at. just from the limited few years ive had working on trannys id say syncro but im not gonna try and say that im posotive. i guess id throw a filter and some new oil at it or wait til its more distinct

either way, good luck

Well, I guess a tranny flush would be worth the chance of saving a couple grand. I will try it in the next week or two. I really hope it is not the tranny again. This would be the second one in the past two years. :banghead:

the reason it only grinds in 2nd is because the inside the trans is a small spring pack that controls the 2nd gear syncro. the grinding noise you hear is the syncro grinding on the gear when you are trying to shift. this will go on for a while untill it will not be able to shift into 2nd at all. you run the risk of breaking a tooth or teeth off the 2nd gear and damaging the rest of the trans gears in the process. with all that said you are going to need to get the trans rebuilt or purchase a rebuilt one.

It's a good thing that Tax season is coming up. I have been spying a nice built T-56 from T56rebuilds.com. Looks like I will be buying another damn tranny instead of a paint job or stroker kit. :banghead:

Are you using a stock shifter? sometime when using a stock shifter when you go into 2nd gear there is no stop on the shifter, this will cause you to not get into 2nd all the way and rely on the syncro to force it the rest of the way in. this is when you are shifting fast and hard by the way. so if you are using stock might i suggest you think about an aftermarket shifter. Ex....pro 5.0,hurst,slp............

Thanks for all the help. When I get the new tranny, I will definetly go with a Pro 5.0.
