4L60e removal
How hard is this? Does the engine need to drop to take the A4 out, or can it be done without touching anything bellhousing forward?
Not that I'm going to attempt it, just wondering what would be involved.

I will be changing mine out this Sunday. Takes about three hours. I have a nice write up with pictures but it is based on the LS1 version. Basically the same other than the LT1's have a inspection cover to remove the t/c bolts. Here you go, this will give you an idea of what it involved.

Grant, I'm surprised you aren't going to attempt it. You did the opti? I know it didn't have the best end result for you, but I give you high marks just for trying. That alone says a lot.
But as far as the tranny- there shouldn't much if anything from the bellhousing forward to worry about. If memory serves correct the following need to be addressed-(I know this probably isn't complete, and I know everything might not need to come out, its just the way I like to do it.)
not in any specific order- the second number is how hard, 1 being Ray with no tools easy to 10 taking you all day and then some
1.)starter-4- but only because you tranny cooler lines are kinda in the way
2.)6 bolts from trans to bellhousing- 7-8, plan on a bunch of extensions and twisting your body to get to them
3.)trans dipstick-2, once the bellhousing bolt is out just pull
4.)crossmember-3 once tranny is supported
5.)exhaust? 5? the 96's exhaust routing might be in the way
6.)driveshaft- 3 easiest way- throw the rear end on jackstands. That way you can rotate your shaft (no pun intended) to get to all 4 bolts
7.)tran cooler lines-5 but only because you can't really see them that well
8.)all electrical connections-2 they only fit the tranny one way, can't really screw them up.
9.)shifter linkage- 3- should come right out since it gets moved all the time
Thats about all I can come up without gettin out the manual to check. I think you should do it Grant. It will save you bunch of money and you will learn that much more about your car. Heck, its gotta be about the thing you HAVEN'T touched on your car..

AS force said...
1.)starter-4- but only because you tranny cooler lines are kinda in the way *(you don't really need to considering you just need to unbolt the lines from the trans)*
2.)6 bolts from trans to bellhousing- 7-8, plan on a bunch of extensions and twisting your body to get to them*(i use a 6,8 and 36in extention with swivels)*
3.)trans dipstick-2, once the bellhousing bolt is out just pull *(mid pass side bolt is attached)*
4.)crossmember-3 once tranny is supported *(four bolts 15mm)*
5.)exhaust? 5? the 96's exhaust routing might be in the way *(you should be okay)*
6.)driveshaft- 3 easiest way- throw the rear end on jackstands. That way you can rotate your shaft (no pun intended) to get to all 4 bolts*(i just used a jack and lifted the rear 1/2-1inch off the ground just enough to spin the wheels, make sure your linkage is in "N" before you take it off)*
7.)tran cooler lines-5 but only because you can't really see them that well *(use line wrenches, i think these are 13mm's)*
8.)all electrical connections-2 they only fit the tranny one way, can't really screw them up. *(one on Driverside tailshaft, other on side of trans on pass side)*
9.)shifter linkage- 3- should come right out since it gets moved all the time*(take this off first IMHO see step 6)*
