E-Brake

E-Brake

I recently had a tire blow out and I had to disconnect the right rear brake caliper in order to put the spare on. I put a piece of wood between the pads so I could maintain fluid pressure. I didn't use the brakes too much since my car is an M6. After I got the tire replaced it seemed like everything was normal untill....I changed the front rotors and pads and now the E-brake only really grabs (to the point of stopping) in reverse. Also the low traction light turns on under moderate acceleration on tar and on gravel (I live on a short gravel road) the low traction ASR power limiter knicks in under light acceleration. Am I crazy or is something wrong.

you shouldn't have had to pull the caliper to put the factory spare on unless you have aftermarket brakes, sounds like the ebrake is out of adjustment

It wasn't the factory spare it was a spare for a 1995 3.4L Camaro. thought it would fit:banghead: . How do you adjust the E-Brake (probly a dumb question)

ps- I have a 2001 Z28 if I forgot to mention.

back up while braking will do a general adjustment that may be enough

Sounds like the cable is stretched..there should be some threads to adjust the cable in to account for some of the slop..

this might sound like a stupid ? but is the rear brakes the e-brake?
like when you put it on it uses the rear brakes correct

Your rear brakes only make up about 30% of your stopping power.

Thats why rear brakes are used. The idea is that the odds are they won't wear out as quickly as front and will be there should you need them. But if you have ever tried to use your e-brake to stop, you understand that it takes a lot longer to stop than just stepping on the brake pedal- but still better than having to use your front bumper to stop...

Reminds me of when i was learninng to drive on the car i drive now(old 1990 saab 9000 CD) my dad made me stop using the e-brake once so just incase i ever needed to i had a semi feel of what was going on. Weird feeling at first but not hard.

oh ok. thanks for clearing that up. i figured thats what it was. that makes sense that the rear brakes wear less too. i think i messed up the e brake in my moms cavalier sliding in the snow...and once on dry pavement. oh well
