Lightbulb Easy Camaro Questions...

Hey guys,

Im totally into learning all about mechanics and tearing down the engine (5.7 Lt1) but Im not a mechanic so I have a couple of questions. haha

1. What is a 383 stroker? Is that a 350 bored out and if so why do people by new 383 strockers when they can just bore out there 350's

2. What is a M6 engine? (I think referring to a LT1)

a 383 is a 350 block thats bored out .030 i beleive and it has 400ci crank in it. so the jump from only 350ci(or 355 after being bored .030) comes from the longer stroke.

the "M6" you're referring to only relates to the transmission. it is just a quick way to identify the transmission in a given car and can be used with any vehicle. on the 4th gen camaros and firebirds they all came with either a 4 speed automatic( A4) or a 6 speed manual (M6).

Thanks for the answers! I appreciate it. I have to say this is the friendliest Camaro forum I have been in. Just one thing, why dont people bore there 350 to 383 instead of buying them?

a lot of people do use their factory 350 engine and just get them machined properly, but sometimes it can be cheaper to buy the whole new engine from a place and just sell your used one for a decent chunk of change. either way can be done, depends on financial situation and the goals you have for the car i suppose.
