The term "free mod" means to 'free' up horsepower. Its not in actuality going to be cost free. Its mods like exhaust, intake, tb bypass, things that make the engine less restrictive than it comes factory.

there are two coolant lines running to the bottom of the Throttle body(where the air first enters the engine and the butterflies control airflow) you need to remove these lines from the fitting, then get a small pipe or some type of hard line that will fit snugly in the end of each line. you splice the lines together and clamp them down, thus: bypassing the throttle body.

what it does is gets the hot coolant away from the cool air we want going into the engine, cooler air= more horsepower. gains have been proven around 5 horsepower.

i think youre wrong. most bolt ons free up horsepower. headers free up exhaust flow, intake free up restrictions. neither of those are considered free mods. i think theyre called that cuz theyre free.

and matt you do it the hard way. theres a simpler way for the TB bypass. here are all of the "free" or "cheap" mods that i know of for the LT1.

TB Bypass: find the line on the passenger side that connects to a hard line on the passenger side of the intake manifold. take this soft line off and throw it away. remove the other hose from the drivers side of the throttle body, trim it about 6-7 inches shorter (check first) and connect it to the hard line. this supposedly keeps the intake charge cooler.

Airbox Mods: if you have a stock intake you can remove the silencer from the airbox. remove the airbox and look down where it used to be. you'll see a plastic housing type thing that is sort of wedged into the body. its tricky, but work it out. if you have a 'bird you'll need to remove the headlamp controller and relocate it. once the silencer is out you can put the airbox back and be done, or you can mod the airbox first. some people trim the hole into a huge opening the size of the air filter, others remove the entire half of the airbox and zip-tie the filter on. these mods help flow more air.

IAT Reloaction: the intake air temp sensor is the sensor on the passenger side of your intake elbow. you can plug the hole there, drill another closer to the airbox, and silicone the sensor in there. then rewire it to the old wiring and youre done. this gets a more accurate reading of the intake air tempurature. it's what those "speed chips" on ebay do, except this one doesnt "fool" anything.

MAF Mods: the easiest free mod of them all is to descreen the mass airflow sensor. its also the most potentially dangerous. be careful when doing this because the MAF is expensive, but if you remove it from the vehicle you will find that the inlet has a screen in place. simply take a screwdriver and poke it out. if youre really crafty you can take the ends off the sensor itself and port them, they are only aluminum and the center cross section can be trimmed and the entire opening can be made larger. personally i picked up a set that was already modded on ebay for $40 but you can do it yourself. doing this helps boost airflow.

neither of these gave anything close to a real SOTP gain, but every little bit helps. i'd say all of this is good for 8-10 hp.

well ive never actually done it. i buy all my LT1s pre-free modded thanks to my car dealer downstate.lol. dont be hating. i gave him the answer he wanted, if he has any mechanical inclinations, he would take what i gave him, study under his hood and find the best way to do what i told him to. thats that. sorry i didnt include pictures and draw in arrows and tell him how much to torque the hose clamps to. lol wtf.

you didnt explain how far to get the lines on the pipe.... also, will the hood need to be popped to perform this modification?
