My dad and I did all the work on the Pontiac we restored and it turned out very slick IMO for a couple of amateurs lol. The same body shop did that paint job, but like I said we did the body work. Do they make a factory looking SS cowl that's metal???

Couldnt find a SS hood that was metal, your only other option is to get a real SS hood from SLP, (there made from SMC, sheet molded compound, a plasticy fiberglass type stuff, supposed to be much better than fiberglass.http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=11263 thats pretty much what I have, except mine came off of an SS that was in an accident.

Yea I looked for a donor hood off an SS, but I didn't have any luck. I saw a couple on ebay, but I wasn't willing to pay the $700+ they were going for. I only have about $600 in mine including installation, paint, and shipping costs, etc so I feel like I came out pretty good. It was black gel coat when I got it so I'm pretty sure this one was just plain fiberglass.

Ok so I owe the ppl at the body shop an apology because it wasn't their fault that the hood had bubbles in it. When we were trying to strip the paint back off the bubbles, it became very, very apparent that the problem was not in the paint or primer, but in the fiberglass. The paint had adhered to the primer very well and the primer to the fiberglass, but there was some incorrect mixing of fiberglass matting and gelcoat which made the hood have some thin places in it that were actually pulled up when the paint and primer were bonding to the fiberglass. In a nutshell the ppl screwed me over that sold me the hood, and there's no way to tell how many more places like that will come up in the future as the hood is in the sun. The gas pockets that formed on the surface (bubbles) actually left some pretty sizeable holes in the hood too. The ppl I bought the hood from are going to give us back $150 because I didn't want another hood from them. I mean, if they send another one I'm out the cost to ship the old one back plus the cost of getting the new one painted and put on, and even then it might just do the same thing. I guess I'll just have this one fixed and hopefully it won't do it again, but if it does I'll prob just keep it on if they're not terribly large because my car is a DD not a show car, and after a year or so I'll try to find a GM brand factory SS hood.

O and sorry my dad can't take very good pics

blue89vert 06-22-2007 11:37 PM

98CamaroZ28 06-23-2007 12:39 AM

damn that sucks, id tap that hood either way, I wish I had a functional hood..it would be sick!

ITSA6 06-23-2007 01:24 AM

well just look for a better one nothin more you can do, glad we are goin with an all steel hood for the malibu

A-RoN'sZ 06-23-2007 01:38 AM

Yea that's what I planned to do. I'll fix this one for the time being, and if it doesn't bubble anymore, great, if it does, then I'll try to find a better one between now and then to replace it with. I guess in essence I'm sayin I'll cross that bridge when/if I come to it...again lol

A-RoN'sZ 06-23-2007 04:26 AM

O and does anyone know where I can get some, I guess, SS hood struts/shocks or some aftermarket ones that arent as stiff as the OEM that came on my Z28? The hood is too weak to handle the pressure of the OEM struts/shocks?

A-RoN'sZ 06-24-2007 03:40 AM

Anyone? Any ideas?

FORCE_FED_Z 06-25-2007 01:15 AM

Try getting some that are factory for the SS's would be my only guess. And this is just me, but it looks like the paint doesn't even match in the pictures. Is that just the picture or is the paint actually off half a shade?

A-RoN'sZ 06-25-2007 01:57 AM

Um...actually the paint matching was the only half decent thing about this whole ordeal lol. The pictures don't reflect it well, but the paint on the hood actually matched well. The front bumper is off a little, but only because it's that weird rubber-ish fiberglass material (it's weird) and it didn't match that well from the factory so I didn't expect any miralces. We were kinda adjusting the camera to focus up close so there were some issues with colors, and the pics with it on the car were taken on a rainy day so still not very good pics. Do you know anywhere I could check on maybe ordering some of the factory SS struts (forums, sites, stores)? Thanks

2000v6cam 06-25-2007 02:01 AM

that sucks dude i always hear people having problems with aftermarket hoods thats why im so cautious about getting one

A-RoN'sZ 06-25-2007 02:05 AM

Yea I guess you get what you pay for. A factory SS hood in my year one catalog is like $1713 plus shipping and I got this one for $464 shipped. However, I'm not sure the saved money is gonna be worth the trouble in the long run lol. Oh well, I guess you live, you learn.
