Absolutely! I've been pulled over for loud exhaust probably more than anyone here, (just because of my age and the Street/Rods I've had) and there is in fact a RCW Code for Altered Exhaust Systems.

But there's also a lot of truth to the point about there being cool cops and A$$hole cops. My 69 Chevelle with the 12.5:1 compression and the full dual 3" exhaust was the best one to use as an example. I was pulled over more than 10 times alone because of how loud it was. It was also running a .610 inch lift cam in it so you can imagine how loud it was.

Out of the 10 times, 2 cops pulled me over just to ask me about it because they liked it. They wanted to know what I was running so they could run the same thing on their personal rods. Yet the one and only time I got nailed with a ticket, I beat it with no problems. When I went to court, I asked the judge to show me the db reading that proved my car was too loud. I told her until she had one, it was only the cops opinion that it was too loud, and if she wanted to convict me anyway, I'd win in appeals court. She new I was right so she had no choice but to drop it.

But the answer is yes.....there is an actual law against modifying your exhaust to be louder than what came from the factory. It's rarely enforced, but it's one of those things they'll use to stop you for.

So Tom, why wasn't your turn signal working?

And yes- I live in NY, I have gotten an 'insuffcient exhaust' ticket. I read the actual DOT law and it states in there that your exhaust can not be modified in any way from the factory.

Since I had tried saying that my exhaust was 50 state legal Edelbrock cat-back previously, I had not knowingly admitted guilt. But no I don't really worry about it.

Wow ... this law is for all 50 states? ... Or just NJ and NY and stuff? ... Because if it includes Washington that makes me laugh ...

I got pulled over awhile ago for like 12 over, because I had just punched it from a 35-45 and actidentally hit late 50's and then a cop came. Anyway, I pled to him that "I just got my new exhaust and I was taking it for a test run out further away from town, because it would be worse in town" ... And it worked, he let me off .... If there is a law agianst modified exhaust in Washington, thats fricken hillarious ... Using an illegal mod as an excuse for speeding ... Hrrrmmm ...

SEMA is fighting the law big time, PA tried to pass it if you remember last year, and SEMA went to court to block it (they used free trade for at least part of it) Having worked as a police officer I can tell you most are decent guys, and a big majority are car guys, but all hate mouthy teenagers with a chip on their shoulder. If your nice to teh cop that stops you the majority of teh time tehy let you go with a warning (I got my first real ticket when I was 25 and had been pulled over many times before, just got a KY state trooper who didn't like my MI plates on teh car) Alot of states have a law stating exhaust is subject to individual officers discrestion, which is not enforcable (I had a ticket for loud exhaust, from a city officer, and had the sheriff in my home town sign it, all I did was drive from where I got the ticket to the sheriffs house)
