all you are doing by adding a switch to a ground wire, is grounding the wire to the relay already on the car.

I would say having a fan switch on a car that overheats easily isnt a stupid idea... Also I've seen several fan switches that dont have relays and have never had a problem.. are they all "lucky"?

ok first of all alot of people do this to there cars because when they go to the track i have it in my car 94 mustang gt. all it does it runs the fans like normal if the switch is off and when it is on the fans get full power (it isnt an on and off switch to the power of the fan.) it is a bypass to the relay ground in the cars fan already that came with the car factory.
and u dont tap the main power u are taping the power to the switch to the realy drrrr

ok i do go to the track sorry to say but the colder ur motor the better when it is 80 out u want to run the fans as much as u can to cool befor ur get on the track. (battery power has nothing to do with going faster) i go with alot of people who have draged there cars for 3 year and have always put ice on there intakes to make there car run colder.

a '79 cutlass(currently a small block, but has had an olds 455 at one time that didn't like pistons), the alternator on a drag car is non existant (it eats horsepower) and a modern car (especially a gm) won't run without a battery, teh alternator can't keep up (not to mention they are designed to shut off if ther batteery drops below 12 volts)

go back to school and learn ur cars drag cars like mustang camaros have alt.
and i dont know if u knwo this but to test ur alt to see if ti is not working u start ur car and disconect the - to the batter and it will still run.
