More MPG+HP? possible.?

Hey guys im 16 and about to go buy my first 2000 v6 camaro on sunday. I was wondering what i should do to it first to get a little more hp..but i want to maintain gas mileage. Are there any upgrades i can do that give me more hp and better gas milage or even the same? The car already has dual exhaust and i have about 600$ thanx alot.

P.S. i live in california so please try to accomadate smog laws

computer tune helps some. Really I don't know what to do and remain emissions legal. Hopefully one of our Cali crew will have a few ideas

viper04af 11-04-2006 05:32 AM

air filter exhuast and tuning will increase power and give a little gas milage HOWEVER it only works if you keep your foot out of it

Phate 11-04-2006 10:50 AM

General rule of thumb with most any cars.

More horsepower = less gas mileage.

But, somewhat contradictory to that, more air in, more air out = more hp. Good CAI, good exhaust setup, Ram air, etc.

but air filter and exhuast also increase the VE so around town and on the highway it is easier for the motor push the car........ so it runs more efficaent...........

but those are about the only mod you get both after that MPG is fubar

And somewhat contradictory to that, owning a v6 = less horsepower, greater mpg

Unless your me.

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 12:19 PM

I believe the car has dual exhaust already. Anyone know any good intakes? How about superchargers? I also want to lower the car. Any good springs?

Thanks alot

Phate 11-04-2006 12:25 PM

Supercharger kit for your car will run around 5,000 dollars. Thats for the average powerdyne kit.

As per intake, it doesnt really much matter. Get on ebay, type in your year, engine, and 'cai' and look for one. If you really want to spend money, just grab one from SLP.

Lowering springs, I wouldnt go anything but Eibach Pro-Kit.

So you think.

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 12:44 PM

I think he was saying that's the only ones he'd go with.

But yes an intake and exhaust will give you more hp and better MPG.

Z28's will do just fine plus you'll save money not buying all the apperance parts.

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 12:47 PM

ya..my bad read it wrong. man you guys respond fast. How do i get the car tuned?

archemedes 11-04-2006 12:50 PM

if you do good tuning with mods it won't hurt mileage as bad (hence there are guys out there with some strong v-8's getting 20 mpg) get a cold air induction kit that has the filter isolated from the engine heat. I'm not a fan of lowering f bodies myself.

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 01:02 PM

how do i tune it tho?

archemedes 11-04-2006 01:36 PM

best way is buy the program with a laptop, but you can find someone with it, or send your pcm out to be tuned

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 01:51 PM

i have a laptop what program?

thanx

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 02:41 PM

anyone know what the tuning program is called?

thankx

FORCE_FED_Z 11-04-2006 03:02 PM

I am not sure, I know what mine is called, but I doubt LT1 edit will work for your 6 shooter.

And yes, you can have horsepower and MPG at the same time. I get over 20 mpg on the highway, but when you get into it its only high single digits so it goes both ways.

viper04af 11-04-2006 03:26 PM

lol Hp Tuners for the V6

GUGdaTHUG3 11-04-2006 04:06 PM

Hey man,

welcome to projectcamaro. I see you live in Cali.. thats cool. Im from San Jose, your lucky you live in Sacramento. You can go to the track whenever you want. You should check out camarov6.com, awesome V6 site. You'll be hooked. Im 17 years old so i know what your going through.

For Hp and MPG, i suggest:

CAI, Whisper lid, plugs (MSD), and wires. good luck.

what exhaust do you have BTW?

GUGdaTHUG3 11-04-2006 04:16 PM

BTW, stay away from Performance chips and Turbonators.

blue89vert 11-04-2006 04:20 PM

and Tornados

viper04af 11-04-2006 05:07 PM

www.fullthrottlev6.com is the best site tho !!!

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 05:19 PM

why stay away from performance chips? +u live in cali wat can i do to the car to keep it legal? thanx. Im not sure what kind of exhaust it is.im going to pick up the car tomorrow

GUGdaTHUG3 11-04-2006 05:21 PM

Why? $20 for 20+ hp.. doesnt that sound a little too fishy? there a p.o.s.

you can get a CAI, Whisper lid, headers with a carb number on them..... all legal in cali.

post some pictures of you car! BTW, names Gilbert.

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 05:35 PM

i gotta have 15 post before i can post a link :( so ill put them on here after 4 more posts. can u show me some headers that would fit the car? if so would be great.

Phate 11-04-2006 06:14 PM

Im assuming its a 3.8L.

http://www.pacesetterexhaust.com/camaro.htm

There are other options, but not many good ones. Those are the best product for the money. If you want the better of the two, get the ceramic coated over the painted.

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 06:33 PM

yep how many hp do u think theyll produce? how about mpg diff

thanx

Are you kidding? I stop going there every so often because theres too many new posts to read. That site is VERY useful.

Has to be, its a 2000.

Youll get about 10 at the most prob. So far, I really cant keep my foot out of it enough to get good mpg. Im gonna say I didnt notice a change with new headers/cat/exhaust.

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 07:20 PM

k thanx.

you car doesn't use a chip so anything they sell as a chip is a farce (most are just resistors that you can buy at radio shack for a dime a piece) they supposedly trick the computer, but typically they do nothing except hurt both mileage and power. Resist the urge to run a cold t stat also, all that does is keep the engine from it's most efficient temp, but fools the pcm into dumping more gas (so millage goes down and hp stays close to even)

FrYd-RyS 11-04-2006 08:05 PM

wait so n0 c0ld air intake?

archemedes 11-04-2006 08:07 PM

cold air is fine, it the thermostat, alot of guys like to run a 160* t stat (they are supposed to fail you at emissions for running them in all 50 states btw) on any dyno test I have seen the most power gained was less than the margin of error for the dyno

Shodown 11-04-2006 11:58 PM

How would a 160* thermo cuase someone to fail an emissions test?

I"m not being a smartass, I really just want to know cuz I have one.
