Talking New Cam

Well I guess I get my Christmas and Birthday present all at once. My dad ordered a cam for my Z 233/239 with a 112* LSA. Now I have to figure out how to install it. Good thing there is LS1howto.com. Got the cam from TSP in a package that includes dual springs and hardened pushrods . I wonder how long I can go without a tune? And if there is any harm in not getting a tune but just driving nice?

Congrats on the new cam! The specs make it sound like a pretty nasty piece. Good luck on the install.

Congrats!

Whats the lift on it?

I cant tell you for sure if its going to run bad without it, but i'd definately recommend a tune. Not only is your gas mileage going to be shiate before tuned, it might run rough and depending on the lift, it might lope so hard it'll cut off between gears if you dont drive it like a non fuel injected car. Driving it without a tune is not going to 'hurt' the car, if its drivable.

And as per the install, i've never installed on in a LS1, so I cant tell you. But I recommend at least having someone whos done a cam install there with you, there is a very small margin for error with tq specs and little things you may not know.

Here are the full specs. 233/239, .595"/.603". Supposedly good for like 50rwhp. But I would be happy with 30hp, keep the expectations low so maybe I will be surprised.

Well, the horsepower depends on your heads, and your supporting mods / tune. You can DD tune it for better gas mileage and easier daily driving, or all horsepower.

With those specs, you will probally need a tune.

Sounds like that cam is going to be pretty nasty...Dude just remember when you install that cam use pin magnets to hold the lifters up...Trust me you do not want to fish them out of the oil pan....Good Luck!

Update

Well it finally arrived...

Here is what kinda makes me mad about it. I know I can get impatient but it took from 12/22 till 1/15 to get it which I am over. But I looked at the cam card and it didn't exactly match . Everything was correct except the LSA. I ordered 112* and I got 113*. I decided to keep it but It kinda makes me made based just on principal.

Oh well, it should have a little smoother idle and horsepower should peak a little earlier. That way I won't have to rev the **** out of it.

Now I just gotta find time to put it in. Damn College.

Well, you did order it over a series of holidays. Always a horrid time for shipping. But being that it was the wrong one would definately upset me alot. Anyway, congrats and cant wait to see it in! You'll love it! Not to mention the install for an LS1 is a joke. The cam install took me 12 hrs on my 3.8 :banghead: and a similar LS1 install took 3 lol.
