overheating

okay tonight i went to Beech Bend raceway, it is like 30 minutes from my house, and ran my car on test and tune night. i ran my car 6 times with my best time on my second pass and it was 13.959. i would let my car set for right around 15 min or sometimes longer in between each pass. i get ready to go home. i notice on the last pass that my car is idling rough. well i drive to my town about 20 minutes away and my car's temp stays at 180-190 then i go around the square and i look down and my temp gauge reads 205. i was like holy crap so i pull over and cut the car off. then i decide to move i drive like 1/2 a mile and she starts boiling over so i pull over again let her sit and cool. i take the radiator cap off put some anti freeze in it and it cools back down and i go home and it doesnt get hot again. what would have caused it to get hot so quick? o and she is smoking some now. would that just b some of the oil that has gotten blown into my exhaust were it hasnt been ran hard in a while. i have a 94 Z28

you had no coolant if you could open the radiator even after a boil out it should have been too hot to open

A dumb question- You were running anti-freeze in the car right? If it was mostly water, which some people tend to do, it will evaporate and then you will have lost all your coolant without seeing any noticable leak.

You would know if you blew a head gasket... Its like a huge smoke bomb when they go.

well it slowly started smoking out of my exhaust and now you can really smell antifreeze burning in the exhaust. it is white smoke and lots and lots of it. i went by a local shop and they said 1000 bucks to put new head gaskets on!!! isnt that a little high?

205 is nowhere near hot enough to do damage (most race cars run at a high of 210 and a low of 200)

Headers- a lot of people (myself included) have seen great results with the Edelbrock mid-lengths. If you want to go long-tube then put on some either some Pacessetters or Hookers if you have the $$.

As for cam it depends on what you want. The LT4 hotcam is about as big as you can go without changing your valvetrain and not needing a tune to get the optimum performance out of it.

As for a quote of $1000 to get the head gaskets changed, that is about right. The LT1 isn't a treat to work on but it is most certainly do-able. A weekend with a couple friends and you should be able to knock it out I would think.

I would save that $1000 and buy the gaskets and some headers, maybe a cam as well and you should see mid 13's, maybe low 13's with no trouble.
