As for cam it depends on what you want. The LT4 hotcam is about as big as you can go without changing your valvetrain and not needing a tune to get the optimum performance out of it.

As for a quote of $1000 to get the head gaskets changed, that is about right. The LT1 isn't a treat to work on but it is most certainly do-able. A weekend with a couple friends and you should be able to knock it out I would think.

I would save that $1000 and buy the gaskets and some headers, maybe a cam as well and you should see mid 13's, maybe low 13's with no trouble.
so with the lt4 i dont need to have it tuned? if so thats good

Without a doubt, you can't do a cam swap and keep the stock tune. Well I guess you could but I definitely wouldn't for more than a day or so.

If you read what I said, you won't need to get it tuned 'for optimum performance' The car will run with the factory tune, just not as good as it could. I put in my cam which is a lot bigger than the LT4 as my car ran with the factory tune- 502/520, 224/236 114LSA..

So yes, you can run the car with the factory tune, it just won't run to its fullest potential.
