Brothers Behind Bars In Brampton Crash That Killed Two Friends

An early afternoon crash on Saturday left two friends dead, and two brothers behind bars facing multiple charges of criminal negligence causing their deaths.

Tragedy struck when the burgundy Pontiac driven by 49-year-old Cynthia Dougherty and carrying 44-year-old Maria Dalsass was struck by another vehicle on Highway 50 in Brampton. The horrific crash involved six cars and a truck and one other driver was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The two women weren't so fortunate and died at the scene.

"She was one of those people that you remembered," Cynthia's brother-in-law Mark Dougherty said Sunday. "She always will be remembered by us."

Two other drivers in the crash, brothers Steven Machado, 21, and 27-year-old Brian Machado, were arrested at the scene and had their vehicles -- an Audi and BMW -- and licenses seized by authorities under the province's new anti-aggressive driving legislation.

The speed limit along the stretch where the accident occurred is 80 kilometres an hour, but witnesses allege the two brothers were going almost twice that speed. Both will appear in court Tuesday.

As for the new laws, police say they're quickly paying dividends, having taken more than 250 vehicles off the road in just over a week.

"We've been averaging about one every 25 minutes," said OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley. "It seems to me that the people we're taking off the road are the very people that shouldn't ever be on there."

Still, the changes came too late to alter the fates of Dougherty and Dalsass, something their friends and family won't soon forget.

"You just can't get over it," Mark Doughtery said. "I don't know what else to say."

I read in the paper that that accident was caused when one of the idiots tried to pass the truck on the soft shoulder. Speeding around other cars like this is bad enough, but come on to pass on a soft shoulder?

If you drive responsible, its not bad for you. IF you obey the laws you wont get in trouble. This just makes it worse for people who drive like retards. This is exactly why we needed those new rules.

No, all it does is further promote the agenda against "street racers". Unfortunately, how many more lives will have to be lost for the media/police to finally admit to the very ignorant public that it it's not young males driving modified cars who are the ones causing these accidents all the time? I've been on the gardiner, the 404, 400, 401, 410, 409...Basically every 100 limit highway in the last couple days and it's more often than not WOMEN or older males in their entry level "luxury" cars who are doing a good clip over the rate of traffic..

But of course, if you own a modified car, you're going to get ****ed beyond belief if you actually pull over for a cop next time, whether you were doing anything wrong or not.

Some people wouldnt need to make lane changes like they do if the foreigners would keep up with the speed of traffic and the truck drivers wouldnt sit in the middle lane driving 20-30 km/h below the limit once they hit an incline on the highway. People need to get to their jobs just like the truckers need to get to their destination!

It all comes down for having respect for other people on the road (e.g. dont drive 100 in the leftmost lanes if you see cars passing you doing 120) and Toronto in general people do not respect one another....more often than not!

City news had CAM on today again and got all these old people calling in and praising him..lol..anywaz CAM really pissed me off today. He kept repeating 2 things.

1) 80% of the cars removed from the road so far are young males in their 20s.

So then, it seems young guys drive fast..sooo...let's fcuk 'em over for being young and stupid in a way that will hurt them for years and years to come. Hey that way the cops, insurance companies and the province can make more money.

2) These cars are no different from guns or knives.

Oh yeh if I ever have to kill someone or defend myself, I'll choose my car as the weapon of choice..haha..what a joke.

And less annoying is his mention of the laws of physics...they do that back in the day at the academy?

It is rare that eyewitness estimates of speeds are accurate so we'll see if they were going 160 when the report comes out.

Don't get me wrong though, if they were the ones responsible and were travelling at say greater than 100km/h then they should get what's coming to them. This one will be interesting though. They seems like they come from a rich family.

Im gonna go against the grain here and tell everyone they are retarded and supporting a government looking more like a fascist regime. I understand the whole concept of punishment but you guys really don't understand how broad this new law is:

-"anyone driving in a risky manner, driving an unsafe vehicle, driving double the speed limit on wet or icy roads."
-"It can be unsafe lane changes, people slaloming through traffic at high speed – about a dozen different offences can result in these charges."

and i don't ****ing get how it passed without me which is an average citizen here 10 years now knowing about it or having a say in it, as a matter of fact when was the last time you had a say in any laws passing. Think this whole thing through guys, im sorry to say but this government is out of control and every single person i know with any sort of head and education agrees with me to an extent.

Think past this whole scare campaign and realize the reprecautions that this new law holds for your safety and ability to PROTECT yourself from laws that are unpopular .

by the way i forgot to mention, if somebody calls in to say that they saw you drive in a way which falls under the curtain of this law if an officer believes that there is reasonable grounds to that allegation he can suspend your license right there and everything else this law permits.
