When I was first reading thru this thread I first thought that since you were lookin at R1's and Gixxer 1000 you had riden before. But since you haven't, I cant' stress enough that if want to live, DO NOT GET A R1!!!!
Everyone of my friends who have had a sport bike has wrecked, at least once. And all of their friends who ride have wrecked. Its just one of those things that if you are getting one to have something that is fast and you can ride hard, don't get a liter bike. You will wind up twisted around a guardrail of tree about as fast as you can crack the throttle.
Go out and buy a R6. It will seem blazingly fast compared to your Z28 and it is a bike with good manners as well. You will be satisfied with its performance for a couple summers at least, esp since you are new to riding. Your parents and everyone else who cares for your well being will thank everyone who talked you OUT of gettin something that is meant for experianced riders.
If you don't think I know what I am talking about go down to the local bike shop, tell them you have never riden before and that you want to test drive an R1 or other liter bike. Just the expression of their face alone should convince you that you are out of your league with that big of a bike...
