One could also, easily say that Microsoft TRIED to jack everything good about the IPOD and make it better. Doesn't appear that they have succeeded thus far though.

i don't think (other than a bigger screen) anything's better than the ipod.

And even the bigger screen has it's drawbacks, the zune is like the size of two ipods stacked.

I don't think microsoft beat apple...i do think they built the best thing to challenge it to date. and they have caused a rift, and i give 'em props for that.

but it's far too early in this battle to call one victor over the other.

It's not that, they just waited to long. XBox 360 was out a year earlier, I don't think their R&D happened overnight. They probably just started sooner and put more people in charge of it so it'd get done faster.

They rushed the zune out the doors.

they did a good job for how quickly they put the thing together.

But it needs to be refined before it becomes an "ipod killer"

Well yeah, but do you have any idea how long microsoft was thinking of making an mp3 player? My guess would be a rather short time prior to the launch of the Zune based on the reviews I've read and what I've heard about it.
