Ok- I can shine a little light on this topic for all of you-
Prior to 9/11 there were hardly any call-ups for the reservists. There were many people that signed up did their 6 years of duty and didn't go anywhere. But as soon as those towel-heads decided they wanted to play- we gave them what was coming to them. Now all those guys who signed up who are now over sees are bitchin because they have to serve. Well too bad- you signed the contract knowing full well that they could be called to active service. These people annoy the **** out of me because they are fully willing to take the money that the army gives out but are not willing to carry out their end of the bargain.
The reserves are a great oppurtunity for someone who wants to be part of the military and serve our country, but it comes with the risk of having to leave everything you love behind should the call come.
And before any of you decide to try and ask me how I know what I am talking about or how I have the right to- I do. I am a SGT in the reserves and also just recently moved up to ***'t squad leader. And yes, my unit did get called up in 2002 to go oversea's and help the war in Iraq. We were sent to Ft. Drum for 5 months in preperation but then Turkey said we couldn't come thru so we got to stay home.
So my feelings are this- Until you have to say goodbye to everything you love knowing that you are going to fight in a war, don't talk **** about the reserves or people that are in the reserves. Yes there are people who abuse the system, but at least they took the step to serve their country. Unfortunately its a lor more than we can say about a lot of people who do nothing but ***** about or country but won't step up and serve it either.
(I know this was long, but it needed to be said. A majority of people don't understand what its like to be in the military and what impact it has on your life. I don't think I am better than anyone else either because I am in the military, just those people who talk **** about things they have no idea about..)
