dont know what 2 do!

i have a 85 jetta gli 1.8 8v and im wondering if it would be easy to swap for vr6 or just throw in a 16v head and bore the block 4 bigger pistons ?

16V motor would be the easy swap VR6 takes more parts and money but worth it, just depends on your budget.

Its not a GLI if its a 8v. Personally you gotta decide what the car is being used for. If its a weekend car, then go with a VR6, if its a daily, swap in a full 16v motor and not just the head. Also make up a budget and start saving up. In the mean time, fix any little problems with the body or interior or anything else that might be starting to break.
