Unfortunately the people who will lose the most is the consumers.

The major cause in the decrease in Blu Ray player prices, is that HD DVD were able to drop their prices for players so low. Now Blu Ray really doesn't need to lower their prices. Atleast not in the near future.

HD DVD really needed more push from Microsoft. But MS I don't think was fully comitted to the HD DVD drives. MS really is pushing their Live service for downloading the movies. They only did the HD DVD as a backup plan knowing the PS3 would be pushing the Blu Ray features.

Like I've said before, I think both formats were merely a couple year stopgap at best until the bandwidth became available to go to downloadable content.

I got a PS3 for Christmas. It works great for Blu-Rays and everything else. I am really impressed by it.

I'll get a PS3 once they have games out for it that I'd play. Right now their library is pretty weak. the next Gran Turismo will likely be the system seller for me. It got me to buy the first 2 playstations.

the downloadables are supposed to take over, but even the experts supporting that are saying Americans especially want a physical item to hold, as well as liner notes, and all that other crap, not to mention the bandwidth to get a truly good picture on a regular basis is still a few years away

I don't see downloadable content becoming popular for a very long time. One of the biggest problems I see isn't the technology to make it possible because that can be done easily enough. The problem I see is if I want to loan someone a movie, they won't be able to see it. Let's say they make it where they could log into and borrow movies from you (which they won't allow) that means all those people need to have the connections and subscriptions set up as well.

How are they going to push the downloading of movies when you don't get to keep them, they are only rentals.

Also the rumored Xbox 360 Ultimate is suppose to have a HD DVD player built in along with 320gig drive and wifi

Haha same here, I have the Elite. We'll see though...

From Microsoft:

"We have reiterated multiple times since launching the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player that we have no plans to integrate an HD-DVD player in to the Xbox 360," a spokesman told GameSpot. "We feel that offering the drive externally is the best way to give consumers the ultimate choice to create their own high-definition experiences."
Of course there's also rumor that Microsoft will licenses the 360 platform to Toshiba which is the company that created HD-DVD. So if that does happen no doubt Toshiba will through a HD-DVD player into it. Otherwise I don't really see it happening. The 360 has been out for so long now I don't see a point in redoing it yet again, just take care of the high failure rate and start work on the next one.

Hearing about the Ultimate I'm kinda happy I decided not to get the Elite even though I really want the HDMI port. Guess I'll wait for this one to come out.

From what was said at CES the "ultimate" Xbox was just a rumor. I thought I read Gates shot that down.

Microsoft's big announcement turned out to be that Disney and ABC will be bringing their content to Xbox Live.

Yeah that's why I made sure to mention it was a rumor. I heard about that they were making an announcement but didn't hear about what it was about.

I heard about the ultimate xbox too, and I also heard that it has now been cancelled, or delayed, even if there is such a thing becuase now since theres a 70/30 market ownage by blu ray.

One thing that makes me laugh, in the technology field anyway, is that there are HD drives out, yet not HD discs. On the other hand, there are Blu Ray discs, yet no blu ray burners. One major factor that may affect this, is the computer take on it. Blu Ray will definitly win out, having 50 gigs, vs. HD's 25 gigs. I also heard from a co-worker that somewhere, someone developed around a 500 gig blu ray disc with around 9 layers.. thats pretty impressive.

I honestly think downloadable content is going to be the way to go, and very soon. Its much more efficient and convenient any way you look at it. It saves you a trip to the store. Maybe youll be able to save them on flash drives, but Im sure theyll integrate copyright coding into them to prevent pirating. Im sure its a couple years down the road, but I believe its coming. Discs are a ****** way for movies if you think about it... all it takes is 1 scrached and the disc is ruined.. When you have a hard file all that is forgotten, plus its going to save you shelf space by being able to keep them on flash drives/hard drives or whatever. I mean, look at music. CDs are going away, its all going to MP3 now... MP3 players in cars, its keeping the CD space and CD books out of the way, its its much more convenient. Thats just my looking at it.

Question: my friend and I were talking today.. Are you able to play standard DVDs on a blu ray player? Ive never heard or read.
