Parents urged to put brakes on street racing
Emergency workers and safety officials are taking the war on street racing to the home front.
Too many parents are either unaware or turning a blind eye to the souped-up cars in their driveways that have the potential to be killing machines on the road, police and fire authorities said at a news conference Friday. "If you are a parent and your garage has three sets of tires and a car with enough gauges to fly to the moon, you are at risk and putting your children at risk," warned Brian Patterson, president of the Ontario Safety League.
He joined a demonstration at the Toronto Fire Academy of the intense 8-metre-high flames that can be instantly ignited in a car crash by even a small tank of nitrous oxide.
Street racing has killed 35 people since 1999 in this province.
The compound is used as a speed enhancer by street racers. Highly explosive, it is often hidden under seats or in the trunk, posing a risk to emergency workers or good Samaritans offering help at a crash scene.
The substance is sold legally, but Ontario has introduced legislation that will make it illegal to drive a car with nitrous oxide on a city street – with a potential fine of up to $2,000 or a six-month jail sentence for offenders.
The message is very simple, said Patterson: "Speed kills. Those tanks have no place in your garage or in your car."
Cars used in street racing often are registered to a parent or grandparent, with a teen or young adult listed as an occasional driver on the insurance policy, said Mark Yakabuski of the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
But nobody in the family will be covered if the car gets into an accident, he warned.
"When you modify a car and you do not inform the insurance company, you have nullified your insurance," he said.
Most street racers tend to be males between 17 and 24, said York Region police Sgt. Dave Mitchell. But you can't stereotype their cars, he said.
"It doesn't matter what you drive – you can have something bred for racing or you can have your mom's Dodge Caravan and still be an illegal street racer," Mitchell said.
Mitchell said Ontario's tough new street racing law and increased enforcement is helping reduce the problem but it hasn't been eliminated.

This **** is starting to get a little bit outta control now. People have been street racing with nitrous, superchargers, and turbos, since before the 60's. In alot heavier cars with less breaking power than a bicycle. So in all honesty !!!!!!

this is f&#*%& bullshit. 38 ppl since 1999 and drunk driving kills how many people a year? like 38x38x38x38 so wtf is the issue? besides the fact that government is trying to look good by brining an issue like street racing to the table bc it sells newpapers and makes headlines. Plus they alreayd udnerstand they cant control drunk driving bc ppl do it neways so they tackle street racing instead.

You know, no one complained in the past, until fast and furious came out. Like Smokey and the Bandit, the Duke of Hazard, Gone in 60 seconds, The Italian Job, Cannonball Run, etc etc etc, right back to silent movies, didn't show racing, crashes, etc. These people need to get their heads out of their asses, and open their eyes. Most Civics, Golfs, Supras, etc, have 4 wheel disc brakes, a lot of them with ABS, hardly any cars anymore have live rear axles, pretty all of them have Macpherson strut suspesion or better. These cars handle better than the C4 Vettes, most mustangs, and most camaros. SO WTF is the problem? Sure the smaller cars now, don't have the space, so when there is a bad accident, it looks worse than it is, but what about 40 years ago, when seatbelts were an option? Oh wait, that's right Ralph Nader. The Corvair. What's next ban civics, and other FWD cars? Ok
Street racing has killed 35 people, in 8 years. How many people have been killed by gang violence this year alone? How many people have been killed by drunk drivers? How many people have been killed by domestic violence? How many people have been killed in bus accidents? We could go on for 100 pages of this , but nothing's going to make any difference, because honestly no one gives a , except the people who get harassed on the way to the track, to race legally. And then they wonder why we go to abandoned industrial parks, or indian reservations.

lol, those car are "killing machine". so if i buy a ferrari and race it on the street, it will not kill anybody?
three sets of tires are nothing. for example, a person owns 3 cars and he has 3 sets of winter tire therefore, he must street race and own "killing machines"

So the message is look in your garage and rat out your kid. Thats what that low-life commentator guy Bill Something said on Global tonight. Say to your kid "I'll call the cops to find out what is legal"
Douche!
How many ppl in GTA are on the bottle? Is this that big a problem? I barely see any that aren't empty, or not even hooked up. There are like 2-3 refilling stations, there have been no explosions...its not a problem.
Anyway, this is pretty sad, more reason for me to chop everything and get a done M5 and roast everything "legally"

So there's a diffrence beetween someone whos had a few beers, and someone who's had 8. Right...?
So there's a diffrence beetween someone whos got nitrous safetly hooked up, and someone who doesn't. Right....?
This stupidity is starting to hurt my heart(ya, heart), makes me sad that people who have no background in this can step in and be "doctor nitrous".

Just last year alone
2006 GTA impaired driving deaths - 70
2006 GTA street racing deaths - 10 or 12 KNOWN to be street racing related, and more suspected as being possibly related to street racing
