From VHS to DVD was a HUGE quality improvement and they still are selling VHS tapes. DVDs will NOT go away for years. I can garuntee it. DVD to Blu-Ray is not that huge of a step... Not by far compared to the step it took from VHS.
And picture quality is not horrible. Honestly, I doubt blu-ray could look that much better than it does on an HDTV with DVD.

Have you ever seen a dvd on a true hdtv? it looks like a pixelated mess. Every company that makes dvd's wants them to go away, vhs didn't lose the support as fast. Right now blu ray doesn't have the picture quality (there are no good titles out) but the hd dvd makes the dvd look like a black and white tv show, it's an amazing difference

keep in mind an hd dvd player sells for about $500 so the blu ray player is going to come down in price fast (as soon as they find one that works). If a standard dvd looks good, then your standards are pretty low, or you weren't watching a true hdtv many of the cheap ones only do the basic "hd" to get by on a technicality, but it's only 480P not 1080P

lol serisouly.. they are not going to dissapear. That is the most rediculous thing Ive ever heard. It doesnt matter how long VHS was around, DVD is more efficient in every way than a VHS, what reason would you have NOT to upgrade to DVD? You dont have to rewind, the quality is like 50x better, and theres so much more data you can fit on one. Now compare DVD to Blu-Ray... what is possibly so much better that its going to replace a DVDs features? Quality... If even, barely at all. Is that it? Not a reason for replacement, or many selling points... I see Blu-Ray as comparison to laser disks.
I still see new movies being made on VHS, even from this year... so yes, VHS are still making new movies.
